Battery for genset.

We just bought our 2014 3150RL. It has an onan 5.5 propane. We do a lot of dry camping and in our old rig we have 4 12 volt deep start batteries. An external genset with an iota 55 amp charger. If any of you have mounted genset do you have a dedicated battery for it.. I plan on 4 batteries and wondering if I should isolate one of them for genset? Maybe with a bypass if I needed battery power if for some reason genset wouldn’t start?. I do plan on solar at a later date which hopefully would top off batts most days. Any info appreciated. Do you rely on your converter to charge your batteries or should I keep the iota?.

Thumbs up

i would say yes to having one batt just for the generator. pending conditions, even a smaller batt should do the job here.

and then if possible 6 or 8 six volt golf cart for house use.
maybe even some solar up top. this setup you should never run out of juice.
and not need to just run the gen all the time.

no. The starter is powered by the trailer batteries and the batteries are charged by the converter in the trailer as if you were plugged in.

You can put your onan on automatic and it will turn on when the batteries drain down to a certain level. Look in your manual and it should explain, you can also run it on a set schedule also a manual issue.
