Rear cap damage

Went out camping for New Years, left on the 1st to head home and noticed some damage on the rear cap. 2018 3920, the passenger side rear, the marker light cover is gone little sheet metal damage minor fix but the rear cap next to the rubber seal has been hit about the size of a quarter. I’m handy and can fix things my self but never repaired fiberglass. I can paint it no problem.

Thoughts..? I would attach a picture but CW has it right now installing the washer and dryer.

Thanks
Tony

Go to a boat dealer and get a patch kit.

We must pay attention to "tail swing" on these long units.

Did you have a little (Tail Swing problem!) You need to remember to watch that on turns. You need to remember that a 5th wheel tow's different than a tow behind! and in most cases is much longer that Y you got a 5er in the first place!

I think it was tail swing I try to watch out for it. I was turning left so I was blind to that side and there was a small wall there, rock wall. Luckily the damage is very minimal, but still don't like hitting anything.

The manager at CW is going to take care of it for me since they have to fix some lot damage on the front cap. Definitely need to track those rear wheels better.

Not sure if anyone has ever camped at Silent Valley in idyllwild. the exit is kind of narrow and I think I swing out to much with the wall to close by. lesson learned

YES! Been pulling out of that same storage facility space for 9 years and never a problem. But this one time the RV in the next space was fudging over on my side a little and I swung a little wider. Complacency will do it every time.

Wow yeah that is a little worse then mine.

CW called and told me 2100 to fix. Yeah the damage is the size of a half dollar but there is some spider cracking that is not that noticeable. They want to cut out the area and patch in new.

With that said I’m not spending 2100 right now but I do want it repaired to look decent and water proof. I need suggestions. I have never repaired fiberglass I have seen the kits and gel coat kits to make the color. What would you do? Without spending 2100 !!

I hit one of those portable basketball hoops on the side of the road literally 300 yards from home. It knocked a pretty good fist size hole in the front cap as well as leaving a nice scratch down the side.

I found a fiberglass repair shop that boaters use pretty local to me, he had a large warehouse to put it inside and he fixed it and buffed the whole rig. See if there is just a "Fiberglass repair" shop in your local area. He billed me like 500 for the whole job.

X2 on the boat repair people. There are 2 in my area that come to the marina and would come to the storage lot if electric is available.

AND welcome to the club! There are thousands of members so do not feel bad!

It was NOT on my bucket list either. My tail hit a fence post while turning into a site. I was taking direction from a neighbor instead of the usual process of my wife watching. Thankfully, only the bottom aluminum was creased and CW made it look new at a very reasonable cost (would have been silly to claim as my $500 deductible covered almost all). I was lucky they had a piece to fit as shipping is HIGH. Keystone ships in a wooden crate so it is long and heavy. As a few hundred have admitted to joining the club in the past 2 years (some long ago hits) there must be thousands!

Palomar Glue (aka duct tape). It held a multi million$ camera (4 Shooter) on the back of a multi million$ telescope (Hale 200 inch) in 1987. The new stuff (Gorilla Tape) will stick forever. Auto touch up to match to make a temporary repair.

I guess I'm a member too as I caught the back of my girl's car in the driveway. Minimal damage to my 5er but about $3000 to her car. I'm gonna use a local boat repair guy for the fiberglass on the 5er for about $200.

If you are real handy and have done body work on a car, you should be able to do fiberglass.

I had never done fiberglass but did cars. I got into a tight corner with my old SeaBreeze class A when towing my car trailer. Spare tire on tongue smashed back cap. I was able to get behind the damaged area, you may have to remove the rear cap in order to repair. Used fiberglass matting, resin, gel coat, hardener and another additive for final coat of gel coat. White gel coat matched, had to mix custom color to match one area. You can sand and polish gel coat just like clear coat, so long as you put it on thick enough.

If it’s a $2100 repair why not turn it in to your insurance ?

if it were me I would spend a few hundred out of pocket to have someone fix it rather than go though insurance, the insurance premium alone would go up more than 200 a year, and will stay that way for several years.... just a thought..
