exterior water filter

Hi All, What are the thoughts about filter use and storage. We have used a new filter one week and it will sit two months before being used again. This one was almost $40 from dealer. Camping world has one right now for less than $30. Can they be cleaned/made safe, if only slightly used? Thankyou for any info. Earl

I never thought of that, we don't have a filter, we use bottled water but I would think that filters could get pretty nasty in storage.

You need to clean it out after EVERY trip and let the filter air dry..do not put it away wet.We also use bottled water for cooking ,drinking, making coffee, tea, etc. We also have found that more and more campgrounds have good city water. Not like years ago where well water was the norm.Once you get accustomed to the water in your own city all other water usually taste "funny" but a filter will not get rid of the 'funny" taste anyhow..we rarely use our filter anymore...

We use the carbon in paper type filter and conceder it a must with the different type of water at parks. If we don't have a outing planned in the near future I take the cartridge out of it's holder let it dry and store it for it's next use.

June2005 -
We bought a regular household filter at Menards (Lowes, Home Depot, etc also carry them). The cartridges are standard and cost about $6. We set it in the top of an orange safety cone that we cut the top off of to fit the base of the filter. Also, don't forget to use a pressure regulator. There are still parks with high water pressure.
