Dodge Maintenance

Since I'm looking at being a Dodge convert (if they ever start selling the 2013 3500's), I'm curious how easy it is to access for regular maintenance. On my Silverado, I need to remove the fender wall to change fuel filters. How easy are filters to change in a Dodge? Any other things that are easier or harder? Thanks.

Dodge is easy, the filter is accessible from the top of the engine. Drain the housing, unscrew the top of the filter housing, remove the old filter carefully wipe out any debris, install the new filter and replace the top. Cycle the ignition switch a few times to fill the housing and you are ready to go. Take about as long as it takes the oil to drain out during an oil change.

My dealer says the 2013s will be in in December.

Ishler, Glad they changed it because my 09 is like the procedure submitted by Ren. Not difficult but a real PITA with regards to time and tools required. Jim

Glad to hear they made it easier. I agree with jimcol, my 09 is a real pain to change so I let the dealer handle it unfortunately.

I thought the fuel filter on the Dodge was always up top and easy to access, my 2001 is, and I have changed it with the exception of one time when I got charged $95.00 for the job. Takes me perhaps 15 min. I would hate to have to crawl under the truck to do what I can do from the top. That is not the only reason I would buy another Dodge over the Ford or Chevy however. I have owned them all and they are all good, I just happen to like my Dodge the best.

2008 PITA, built a tool to unscrew the the canister with just the right amount of clearance for sensor and drain valve. 5 minutes with new tool, a nightmare without.

I have an '06 Ford with the 6.0PSD. My truck has TWO filters... One on top on the engine block next to the oil filter and one under the truck in the fuel line. The top one is a cinch to change out. The inline one is a lttle harder (and messier), but I can still do them myself.

How about the other brands and Ford models? Do any others have TWO filters in their diesels?

This summer I installed a second filter ( Mopar heavy duty fuel filter) in line under the truck, with the bad fuel that shows up out there once in awhile I thought a litte insurance to protect the fuel system would be a good idea. Now on the 2013s there is two fuel filters standard

Both the 6.4l and 6.7l powerstroke have two fuel filters. One on the frame rail by the fuel tank, and one under the hood. The 6.7l under the hood secondary filter is one little bolt, unplug the inlet and outlet fuel lines and the whole assembly comes out. Watch the youtube vid from my first post, and you'll see what I mean. So easy a caveman could do it.

I just did both filters myself a few weeks ago. No harder than changing the oil. Just dont forget to turn the key 5 or 6 times to let the filters and fuel system prime before starting the engine. So easy, there is no reason not to do it regularly in my opinion.

Ron,
Here is a good forum to join about the RAM Cummins trucks:

http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/

Also, one of the sponsors of the Cummins forum, Geno's garage:

http://www.genosgarage.com/?gclid=CM...FSpnOgodZ1IAMg

sells all the needed parts and tools for changing your own filters. I have the oil filter wrench:
http://www.genosgarage.com/LISLE-547...tinfo/LC54780/

and it works great. Also bought the socket for loosening the fuel filter cap:
http://www.genosgarage.com/LISLE-146...tinfo/LC14600/

Now, mine is a 2011, so I don't know if they change with the 2013 model year.

Fuel filter is located on the right hand side of the engine, very close to the firewall, so it is a bit of a stretch to reach it.

Oil filter is a screw on filter, accessible from below with a very long extension and the above wrench.

Again, don't know if anything is different for the 2013, but my 2011 is very easy to do.

They must have changed them along the way some where. My '04 is supper easy from the top. Just unscrew cap, remove filter, drop in new, put cap back on. Cycle key to fill filter and start. Done.

They are still pretty easy, just like you said, just that its real close to the firewall, and low. So you have to stretch to reach the cap.

As others noted, the newer Rams are easy but my 2007 requires the fender liner removal unless one has really skinny arms and hands. Like JimCol, I let the dealer handle it every 15,000 miles, per the manual. I'm usually in and out in half an hour or so, if I have an appointment.

Steve, It was Packerfan that let the dealer handle it. You know I am much to cheap for that. Good to see you back on the forum. Jim

Steve - no one has ever accused me of "skinny arms". I heard December 10th we'll be able to order our new truck. We'll see how that works out.

Good luck with it Ron. I'd love to have one of those new ones but this 2007 only has 92,000 miles and runs and drives like new. Good luck.
