Pine pitch on awnings

Anybody got a good way to get pine tar off awning, toppers, and roof? Anything that works seems to be a petrolium based product which, as I understand it, should not be used on those things. Last summer I got "rained" on by pine trees. I've never seen so much tar!

I use fingernail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. Be careful rubbing too much as this can take the color out. I stayed at a park outside Boston and it was full of tar. I spent each day removing it from trailer and truck. A real pain....

ON EDIT: I think the key is getting the tar off as soon as possible. It was a daily chore while in Boston area, one that I will not soon forget nor want to do again anytime soon. I would be very wary of using something no one else has used, regardless of who recommends it. I have used these two products and know they work, just don't rub too hard or long and wash with soap and water afterwards.

I hate to say it, But good luck. We stayed at a cg in NY under some pines, we always ask now and try to avoid them. But to answer your question, I have found nothing works very good. even when it looks like it gone the sun will turn the spot white. I worked on my awning for 2 days 4hrs each, it's better but not gone.

good luck

Out of curiosity, I googled pin tar remover. Answers included alcohol, mayonaise, and peanut butter among others.

The alcohol is probably for you so the wife has a reason to tell the neighbors why you are rubbing mayo and peanut butter on the awning.

Well... I have used booze to try to solve the problem but have found it a waste of something good to drink! Thanks for the peanut butter thought, but I will have to drink more before I try that one!
Thanks for everyone's responses.

Last summer while camping in one of our club camps, I got a mess of fir sap all
over the awning on our nice new Monty. I tried WD-40 on it, and at the time I
thought I had removed it all. So we have been down here in AZ for the winter,
and I guess the sun brought out these nice white spots on the awning.
So after reading the MOC I used some isopropyl alcohol with a soft cloth, and picked a
cloudy day to do it. Don't rub too hard, then a wash with soap and water afterwards,
and presto, just like new again.

I wonder whether Goo Gone would work on that? It's pretty sticky, right?

Tar remover, automotive chemical type? I'm not sure how that would affect the fabric or color, though.
