DTV anntenna ready?

I have an early 2006 3295RK with a Winegard Sensar Antenna. My documentation does not specifiy a model number.

In Feb 2009 with broadcast TV goes digita (DTV) I understand most "good" antennae will be able to pick up the signal. Then I will have to have a converter box to dummy down the signal so my analog TV can show the program.

My question is "do I have an antenna that can pick up DTV signal" or do I have to replace the antenna?

Our unit has the stock Winegard antenna. The dealer replaced the tv that died with a newer one and we receive digital channels with the same antenna. The bedroom tv is the older one so it does not receive digital channels so I am guessing that it is the television set and not the antenna that answers this.

Thanks for the reply boylana

I called Wingard. They said I probably have a rv-3095. Also that i should reveive DTV signals over their antenna (crank up batwing antenna).

They have a converter box, RC-1010, that is approx $140. They can send you wiring diagram so the RC-1010 can we wired into the "signal box?" so one rc-1010 will service both TVs. Also to do that wiring a "modulator" available at WalMart etc would be nedded.

SO it seems for $150 I can make the required switch to DTV for both TVs. Or I can buy one new TV (pick a number...$500 up)I can have one, new TV with full HDTV (not just DTV) when the show is broadcast in HDTV.

Can we use the forty dollar coupon on the converter? If it is the right converter why would you need anything from Wal Mart. Why isn't that extra part included?

We have a brand new HD telie for the bedroom, and we are using the OLD Winegard antenna. Al was going to buy new bat wings from Winegard (they are painted, not silver). Winegard said they would give you better reception. Bat wing was about $85.00 from CW.

Now, after a little thought, and based on a LOT of research he did this past summer on Dish telie and antennas and HD telies and old telies, he decided to leave the Winegard alone. The HD telie gets real nice pictures with that ole Winegard.

At the proper time he will put a box on the older telie (flat screen but not HD) in the front room of Tana.

We have a new HD telie at home and we are running it with rabbit ear antenna, and that antenna is several years old. We purchased new (2 different ones) antennas that were supposed to be super for HD telies, ha ha, they did not come close to the reception we got with the old rabbit ears. Needless to say, they went back to Best Buy!

Wineguard told me the 40 dollar gov't coupon was not accepted by them. They only sell thru dealers, like Camping World. Will CW accept the coupon? I don't know. As for the $40 part, it is needed to wire into the switch box, but not needed if you simply put the rc-1010 attached directly to a single TV.

Thanks Gene. I was wondering if we could install the converter where the lead from the bat wing inters the on-off control. It would feed the system in the unit. If you have two TV'S do you need two converters?

hazmic,
Both TVs off one converter (rc-1010)is possible with the extra part using the wiring diagram they will email you to wire the stuff into that switch box (whatever it is called).

We're getting digital channels from our standard batwing. What I don't know is whether the newer batwing Ms. CountryGuy mentioned will do a better job of picking up those signals. I'm not sure whether we're getting everything we should, or not, in other words. If anyone sees a test of the two batwings, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

The lady at wineguard asked me what color my antenna was: white, grey or silver. Mine is silver. She said customer feedback indicates white and grey are marginally better but silver will be just fine.

The only concern with an antenna is that it is not painted with a lead based paint. Special antenna paint should be used. Color should not have a thing to do with it

Got my Consumer Reports today. Here is what they say:

"Question: Do I need a special antenna for digital TV?

Answer: Not necessarily. If your current antenna works well now for VHF (channels 2 through 13) and UHF (14 and higher) you should be fine, though you may have to adjust the antenna for the best reception. If you can get only channels 2 through 13 you will probably need a new antenna"

There was more to that report, and if anyone is interested I will scan it and post it. However, basically it states that the better the antenna the better the reception is going to be and that boosters improve your chances of getting more UHF channels. DTV is broadcast on UHF Frequencies. Also, building, trees and other structures can reduce your ability to receive a signal. (duh!)

Wayne, I don't think Gene (or the Wingard rep) were implying the color had anything to do with receptioon, but that different models are different colors, ergo the models that are painted gray or white are marginally better models than the "basic" silver one.
