Converter Fan

Help! It seems that the converter has a fan that periodically has run in the past, but I have noticed lately that there is no fan periodically running. Is this a concern and how should I deal with it It seems about the time I have the Monty figured out a new situation arises and the owners' manual is of no assistance except to take a few minutes to look up something and find there is no info to assist you. The manual doesn't even mention any type of fan. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

My advise - don't panic!

The coverter fan is designed to do it's own thing, and I never could figure out if it was temperature or electrical load driven. There may not be anything wrong, just a change in conditions.

If the fan is broken, just let the converter run to destruction. You'll end up replacing the whole thing anyway as I don't think you can just buy the fan. If you're like me, you'll be needing MORE POWER anyway, so you'll end up with the new 80A unit .

I would think the fan is temperature driven, probably just cooler this time of the year, therefore less fan?

Assuming that you have an Iota converter, you could try contacting their customer service. (Their number might even be in "the book").

Got this from the Iota web -

Q Is the fan on the DLS going to run at all times?
A No. DLS units feature "proportional fan control," meaning the fan will run only when needed and at the speed necessary to cool the unit.

Not sure about a 2004 model, but this indicates the fan on thier products is also variable speed, so you may just not be hearing it.

Also on their web site IOTA is a manual on that converter. Also lots of info. Just letting it burn up might not be the thing to do. Could be a fire and then you don't need to worry about it. ONTMONT[John] is right about the way the fan runs. Good luck and keep us informed.

Run many 12 volt loads, it should kick on then. (furnace fan, scare lights, all interior lights)
If it doesn't, it may be bad, or the converter may not be working, and you may be on battery, but I doubt it, as you would know by now; no 12 volt anything.

My 2004 has a Parallax converter, you might want to make sure what brand you have.

Ozz hit the nail on the head. Turned every 12v light on and the furnace fan. DW said I would never hear the fan if it were running with the furnace fan going. So got right down next to the converter and lo and behold the fan is running. Thanks Ozz and everone else for your input. I just knew someone in the MOC family would have the answer.

That's exactly what I'm doing Brad. Just got back from a one day bus tour to Monterey, Mexico and nice to relax with cubes floating in some brandy.
