bearings repack
It has been 1 year and nearly 8k miles. Time to have my axle bearings repacked. Besides an RV dealer, where else can I call for this type service? A truck tire place? Some sort of commercial trailer service center? I don't know my options. I appreciate your help.

I use an outfit in K.C., Croft Trailer, that sales and services utility trailers. They do a ton of RV's even though they don't sale them. Great service and their mechanics are very knowledgable. They have serviced my brakes and packed bearings.

Didn't finish my reply before I posted. I wasn't suggesting you come to KC to have your bearings repacked. Just pointing out another type service center that does the kind of work you inquired about.

Gene,
I prefer taking mine to someone that I know understands my Montana. If that's the dealer, so be it. But there are others out there who are knowledgeable who run tire shops and general automotive mechanic work. If you're near Farwell, Tx, I can give you a name.

Bearing repack is not a big deal. To me it was someone who understood the electric brakes and could check them at the same time. That's what's new to me in this deal. I've packed wheel bearings for 40 years.

Thanks all. All good suggestions. Makes sense to use a utility trailer dealer or a RV dealer. I have used RV dealers in the past. Oh, and I guess there is Camping World too.

I am with Orv and recommend that fellow in Farwell Texas.

I waited for 2 years and more than 20,000 miles before repacking the bearings and all was well.
Is there a rule of thumb for having the bearings repacked?

My Keystone manual says 6 months or 5k miles, I think. My dealer said 12 months or 10k miles. Other dealers have said every 12 months. So I know not a rule of thumb. I have adopted annually for my guideance. I get the brakes inspected at the same time. The cost seems to very with the shop rate, but I get quotes from TN and NM at 200 to 250 plus parts (seals) and supplies.

I have mine repacked annually ususally in the spring to get ready for the travel year. The going price around San Antonio is about $75/axle + supplies. So about $170-190 for a Montana. Keep up on your maintenance needs -- it can sure make towing alot easier!
