Autoformer Question???????
CW has a 50 amp autoformer for $450.00 while the Hughes 50 amp autoformer is going for around $560.00. Anyone know the difference???? The one at CW sure LOOKS like a Hughes...... Need to buy one soon. Anyone know of a better price for the Hughes?? I was looking at Tweetys.....

I guess you need to compare the specification sheet for each and then make your choice.

That is what I paid for my Hughes Autoformer, Phil. Double check that the warranties are equal. Hughes warranty is three years parts and labor, you pay shipping. I don't know anything about the CW unit.

I had a Hughes "look-alike" that failed and the mfr didn't stand behind it. CW will stand behind it. I prefer the Hughes model since they have been in the business for quite some time.

Phil, I have a Hughes, but you have to decide how much you can rely on C.W. So far, I haven't had any trouble with what I've purchased from C.W.
I purchased my Hughes at the Good Sam rally in Oregon, also didn't have to pay sales tax there.

Thanks everyone, I ended up buying the Hughes from PPL Motorhomes for $519. I thought this was the best price around. I agree with going with the name brand, I just thought the CW one may be a Hughes in disguise.....Did have to pay $25.00 shipping to Florida, still saved a bundle over retail. 3 year warranty also.......I do have one other question for those of you that have the 50 amp model. Can you still use it with 30 amp service by just using the plug adapters?????Will it still function the same way? I imagine it does.....
Again, Thanks as always you guys came through....

My Hughes is hard wired into the Monty and I use it without any problems when plugged into 30 AMP. During our summer travels I seldom drag out that 50 AMP Anaconda. During the summer, I seldom have a need for the 50 AMP and 90% of the time just use my 30 AMP cord.

Phil, my autoformer was wired in the line just before the inverter. The line was cut and the male/female adapters were wired on the incoming line. This way, I only plugged it in and now that I'm trading, I just unplug it and remove it for the new Montana. Hope you purchased the install kit too. If you hard wire it in and cut the male line, you will void your warranty.
What this means is, I use the 30amp any time I'm not plugged into 50amp.
Before I had it installed, I just used the 50amp cord from the Montana to the Hughes and then reduced it to 30amp at the source.
Also, some cg's have a problem with the autoformer, they think you will mess up their electric, go figure!
Bummer is when leaving it outside, it could grow legs!!!!!! I haven't figured out how I'm going to install it in the new Montana.

We had the Hughes and had no problems with it.. In fact we never had the occasion to use it so we sold it to a fellow MOC'er. Make sure you have a need for one before spending the money.

I actually had a need for mine the first week after purchasing it in Oregon. The cg we stayed at in northern California had low voltage and it was very handy. It has come in handy quite a few times since too.
Also, don't forget, it has a built in surge protector that will keep your Montana from having things fryed. I realize you have to send it back to get it reset, but that one time could save you a bundle!

I am going to have it installed as you did Steve, also so I can plug my EMS PT50 into it also and unplug everything if needed. The last three CG's I have been in have one line with low voltage and my EMS system kept cutting the power. I had to remove the EMS system which I do not like doing, hence the need for the autoformer.
