Southern Maine

Looking for suggestions for next summer, late June for family vacation locations. Mainly looking at campgrounds south of Portland.

Also looking at roads to avoid as we travel from the Greensboro area of NC up to Maine.

My DW loves to plan early so I am trying to get a head start for next year.
Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

I know it's not south of portland, but time spent in the area of acadia national park is so worth it. We stayed at a rv resort on the mainland side just before crossing bridge to mt desert island....Narrows 2. We always take 495 in massachusetts and rejoin 95 at the new hampshire border. A lot more enjoyable for me. Enjoy maine. John

Bayleys is one of our favorites. See below

Adult only pool with Bar and Grill

Big rig sites at the rear of the campground around the pond.

View from Pond side Big Rig Site looking at Adult Pool and Hot Tubs

During the "On Season" free shuttle service to Old Orchard beach every 30 minutes. Golf Cart rental. Restaurant, Large Store, Lobster, Many local seafood restaurants with in a very short distance of the campground.

Outdoor movies. Three in ground pools located in 3 different locations. Front of the campground with 4 hot tubs.

Second pool near rear store and outdoor theater with Mini-Golf.

Third Pool (adult only) 2 hot tubs, bar/grill.

The On Season prices are a bit rich. HOWEVER for the entertainment provided (bands, movies, and on site amenities) I believe it is worth the cost. Additionally the before and after On Season rates are quite reasonable.

We go there usually once or twice a year.

We stayed at Baileys for a week in August. That place is huge. While there, ask around about the lobster store that sells any size lobster $6 each. Baileys seafood restaurant has great food. While there, check out the 1906 beach amusement park close by.
If you go through Freeport, Maine, Tuesday mornings 8-9 the Freeport Flag Ladies, have been waving the American flag every Tuesday since 9/11. Excellent support group for our troops. ForeverFree@FreeportFlagLadies.com

I found it, the name of the $6 any size lobster market is: Flaherty's Family Farm, 123 Payne Rd, Scarborough, ME. 1-207-883-5494. It has fresh foods and a variety of jarred item. Have fun.

I agree with jcurtis934: if you're gonna be near Portland, you must get to Mt. Desert Island. Acadia and Bar Harbor are beautiful as is a trip around the island. Beautiful coastal scenery. On the other hand, Bayley's is much talked about as a destination up this way. I have never been there, so I don't know, but have to think all my friends that have wouldn't steer me wrong. It's been on the list for awhile, but whenever we head to Maine, it's usually Mt. Desert Island or Boothbay Harbor, another good destination. You might want to look into Pt. Sebago as well. That is in the southern part of the state, although not on the coast. I have been there and found it to be a very busy campground with a lot to do, if that's your thing. Another thing: Traveling through Mass., take Rt. 495 North off of Rt. 95 and avoid a lot of aggravation. It is more mileage, but much better, especially if you're towing. You can jump back onto 95 north of Boston, as was mentioned above. AND, if you take 495 north, only one exit up from Rt.95 is Rt. 1, where you would go to get to Foxboro and Gillette Stadium, home of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots!

Going to Bayley's in June. Only an hour away. Have heard nothing but good. Looking forward to it. If you are heads g to NH I highly recommend Danforth Bay.

Mighty Jo Campground in Milton Mills NH is a very good campground. It is not far from Portland (about one hour to one and a half). Has several playgrounds, is on a lake, exceptionally clean and close to shopping centers.

If you get in the back 40 at Baileys, one must drive to the restrooms. Kens seafood shack is greAt. Bailreys is expensive..80 per night over 4th of July. Lots of toll plazas on the way...

We have a seasonal spot at Stadig campground in Wells, Me. We get lots of big rigs coming in with no problem. There are quite a few temporary spaces that are pull in and out. It’s in the north part of Wells (which is a good thing traffic wise) and right next to Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. We love Maine.

This is the kind of information I love to see about areas I have not traveled much!!! Online reviews are ok but getting the information from folks on MOC who I know I can trust is far better!!!! Thanks all. When I get ready to head up that direction I will be checking back to this posting for sure!!
