Steel Valve Stems

Well, I got a shock when I called to find out the price of installing metal valve stems on my four tires on the Monty. Camping World wanted $228 plus the cost of the valve stems. So, about $55/tire just to take the wheel off and install a new valve stem. What would be a reasonable price for this?

Did you say they were metal vale stems or "Gold Valve Stems", jeez that seems high.

I had mine done for $20.00 a tire two years ago at a Les Schwab in WA. Plus the price of the stems, can't remember the price for them...

Rames14,
I think the $10 to $20 per tire figure would be fairly priced. Certainly anything over $20 is probably too much. I'd think any decent tire shop would change them out for a much more reasonable price.

Good luck,
HamRad

I bought the stems and my tire shop put them on for me at no charge. They don't have to remove the tire, they put it on the machine, let the air out and push that part of the tire away from the rim. After they install the stem, they reinflate it. They don't even break the bead on the opposite side of the tire. $228.00 is a major ripoff.

I paid $3.50 for the stem and $5.00 to install it. This was for each tire.

I had mine done at Discount Tire in Harlingen (RGV) over the winter. Price was about $17 per tire for a steel valve stem and balance. I removed the tires myself, and took them in one at a time over a couple days.

I agree..........major rip-off.

I charge $20.00 per tire. This includes removal from trailer, valve stem, spin balance, and installation on trailer.

wow, and I thought I paid alot when I paid 34 for the stems and 50 for them to get installed! When a place trys to rip me off like that I make sure they know it! One, it makes you feel better and two, they know they lost a customer. I would write a letter/e-mail to camping world and express my outrage to customer service. It might just help someone down the road!

I agree with $15 to $20 and while you have them off include tire balancing.

I recommend finding a TRUCK tire shop that has the heavy duty jacks (20 ton) and get a quote from them. They can jack the whole trailer and do all the tires in a short amount of time.

Obviously, the price quoted is the "I really don't want to do this" price and if you are crazy enough to pay it, then they'll certainly take the money.

We need to know which Camping World came up with this price!

Thanks for the replies. I will be writing an email to Camping World to let them know my thoughts. My feeling is they don't want to do this type of work. If that's the case, say you don't want to do it - don't rip me off. I may even cancel my order and go direct. Thanks again.

Les Schwab for us too. If I recall it was around $15.00 per tire.

Where you at Ron?

I'll drive over there take the tires off, drive them to a tire store, have valve stems replaced, then replace them on your trailer for half that.
