Electrical issues

We now have a 2017 Montana that we really like. I had a 5500 watt Onan generator installed by Camping World. When running my coffee maker and any other appliance, including the furnace, the circuit breaker on the generator trips. The coffee maker draws 1500 watts during the heating process.Any suggestions? I also notice there is not a GFI on any of the kitchen receptacles. Is that normal?

If your rig is like ours, all the kitchen recepticles are on the GFI located on the side of the island. No that doesn't sound right. What else are you running at the same time. Frig, water heater, one or more AC's would all affect it.

The 5500 watt Onan is only rated a bit over 45 amps at 120 volts, so that is only 5400 watts. Your furnace runs on 12 volts DC, so that isn't much to factor in the load. You have a converter, electric hot water heater if in electric mode, fridge if on electric mode, your coffee maker, and just with these, you can be way over 5400 watts. My two 2000 watt Hondas are capable of 3200 watts when banked together. To get full use of everything in your rig, you would need a generator capable of 12,000 watts continuous, 6,000 watts on each leg, and I don't see where you would carry one that big. The secret is, power management while using a generator. Turn the fridge and water heater to gas only mode, and be aware of what loads you are using. You might get away with using the microwave with one A/C running, but you still have to be aware of the converter load and anything else that is a high load.
