New Toy......

Been wanting one of these for awhile now. Work in progress, but it sure is fun! Got some work to do on it before we run the beach tho.

Way cool, man.... and this one looks almost street legal - headlights, windshield, bumper and fenders (well, the fenders are close). You'll be able to go from the beach to the closest burger joint with ease!

Is it powered with a horizontally opposed 4 cyl Volkswagen Beetle engine? Worked on many of them, brings back memories. Thanks for sharing.

Those 1200/1300CC engines were sure easy to work on.

Chassis is a 1965 VW Bettle. Engine is 1600 dual port VW (not sure what year)with Weber progressive 2 barrel carb. I've had it up to 65MPH, but it gets pretty light at that speed. It is close to being street legal here in TX. I need to add an emergency brake, and a regular horn. Got the ooga horn on it now. The emergency brake was removed when the previous owner had it converted to disc brakes on all wheels. It has a hydraulic lock for the rear brakes, but it is not legal, nor is it dependable. The previous owner used it once, and had to bleed the rear brakes to get it to unlock. New calipers on the rear wheels with mechanical lock will be required, along with cables and pull lever. Not sure what the body is, just know it is not a Manx body. I'm still trying to ID the body. It was originally the green color, and I found where it had "The Grinch" on both rear fenders.

I drive it around here now, just not to the beach. I am running an Antique license plate, which has driving restrictions, but doesn't require a state inspection.

As far as the fenders, you can get a sand rail buggy inspected and street legal here in Texas.

I don't think that VW chassis would hold up to a work-out. Looks pretty flimsy to me. I'm already gettin the itch to build my own buggy, and use a custom built frame under it. But wait, I'm 400 miles from home, no shop, not many tools......guess I'll just have to live with what I've got.

I had mechanical brakes on mine but on either side of the emergency/parking brake handle were two small levers that in a regular VW were for something else. I did individual mechanical connections to each rear brake (right and left). This gave me an unbelievable street turning ability. When entering a right turn I would just yank on the rt lever and it would lock the right rear wheel and shoot me around the corner. We called it poor mans poss i-traction. loved that vehicle! I also acquired a Gia engine and straight piped it. Damned fast.

Burger joint? Hmmm. No burger joint where I live. Just the "Silver Dollar" and "Hooches".

Love that paint. If you do get off road no need to worry about bush scratches. Enjoy.
