New Member New Montana New Problem

This is My 3rd 5th Wheel. 1st was a 2006 Montana 3400RL Then a 2015 FR Cardinal 3850RL Now 2019 Montana 3810MS Legacy Edition. I went to pickup my new camper yesterday when I was leaving I had no Trailer brakes the dealer said they did not activate until I hit 20 Mph and sent me on my way that did not work. So had to turn around go back. Then they told me the new hydraulic disk brakes are not compatible with my 2012 GMC factory brake controller. Has any one else had any problems with this ? So I had to leave my new camper at the dealer until I can get this figured out. Thanks for any input.

Look to see what hydraulic unit is installed in the front compartment. Go to that manufacturers website to see if it is compatible with your truck. If not, they will have a circuit board that will go between the two parts to solve the issue.

First welcome to the forum! This has been an occasional issue with folks who had Morryde installed disk brakes over the years. Certain model pickups original equipment brake controlers didn't work with their hydraulic brakes. Not too surprising it's also happening with Keystone installed brakes. On a 2012 Dodge they could flash the computer and the newer program would allow for hydraulic control. Not sure about any other brands, but worth asking.

I'm going back to the dealer to try to figure this out tomorrow. but it looks like I have to add a module to the brake system to change it from electric to hydraulic. I will post what the fix is.

Sounds like your dealer is a liar and wanted you to tow the unit off the lot so you own it at that point.

I'm probably the first one to get the new hydraulic disk brakes with an older truck.

At the fall rally in Goshen I learned that to convert to disc brakes I also needed to install a new compatible brake controller as mine would not activate the system. No problem, just replace you existing controller with a new one. I dealt with Performance Trailer Braking, they are good people and easy to work with if anyone is looking to convert to disc brakes.

We had hydraulic brakes put on our 2013 Monte this last summer and when they installed them they had to install a special solenoid or something so our 2012 Chevy 3500HD would work with the unit installed. I don't recall the actual item but the RV tech that installed the brakes said he has had done quite a few of these because the design of the braking system was not designed for the Chevy/GMC older trucks. We have a new 2018 3500HD now and no problems.

Keith, you're dealing with an Idiot of a Dealer For the older GMs with the Integrated Controller you need to add a module that makes the TV think it's still dealing with Electric Brakes. Or if you want to cheat you can just add an old electric brake magnet inline before the pump assembly.
I had the Carlisle Pump assembly and used the Carlisle CAM module with my '11 Silverado and three different RVs with Disc Brakes.
I would hate using an after market controller when I have a excellent controller built into the TV.

This is 100% correct. I can tell you by experience. I added the old brake magnet which cost me $5.00 and spent 15 minutes wiring it in my self. This was on an older Chevrolet Duramax/Allison. On my new Duramax the integrated controller works without modification.

This is a simple issue with a simple correction. The $85 module will also work I am sure, but the old magnet did work without it. -- "cheating" I'm sure is meant as only a figure of speech. It certainly has nothing to do with legality.

I called Dexter And talked to a Engineer. He recommended the HydraStar Electric over hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module ( HBA-CAM 381-7073 ). then I called my Dealer than they called Dexter told them the same thing. so the Dealer pulled the Brake Controller today and put it back to the Factory system. and ordered me the Module. but I all ready put the Camper in storage. so they are going come and pick it up in the spring and install & test.
The Dealer did tell me this is there first camper with Hydraulic Brake system and they ordered extra Modules to have in stock for the next guy.
they seem to be very apologetic and doing what they can to keep me happy.

The service manager should be fired, and the tech who agreed to install aftermarket controller.
It is a shame this is the norm at rv dealers today!

Just got a new 3810MS myself, seemed to brake just fine for me. Running a 2015 Chevy 2500 Duramax Deisel. If you figure out the solar pre-install wiring let me know. I have not taken it out yet, only 50% loaded so far.

Glad I read this. I'm planning to have Morryde insall disk brakes when they install IS. My TV is a 2007 Ford F350. I expect Morryde will install what is needed, but it's good to know about a potential issue.
