Air Condition Freezing

I have a 2005 Montana Mountaineer Fifth Wheel 318BHS. I purchased the camper new 11/04. Recently, I have noticed the ac freezing. It is a Duo-therm ac unit. This past weekend I had the ac set aroud 70 when I noticed the unit had frozen after during a roof inspection.

Any suggestions where I should start to diagnose the problem?

If you operate the ac fan on high speed (noisier), the ac will not freeze up as easily. RV acs will only drop the interior temp by 10 degrees or so. If it's 90 outside, the best you can hope for is 80. Good luck - Don

I had this happen to a TT we owned. We were in Arizona and the unit would ice up and the air flow would be greatly diminished. Before we could get to the dealer, we just turned the unit off when the air flow stopped and let the unit thaw and turned it back on again.

I don't remember exactly what failed, but it was a simple fix that the dealer took care of. After the repair, the unit cycled off properly to prevent freezing and worked fine after that.

There is a sensor of some sort that comes loose, shifting near your coils and causing problems. It's been a year or so since we were talking about this last, but hopefully some will be along shortly to describe this fix...

My AC at home used to freeze up when the condenser coils were dirty. With that in mind, take a look at this article:

What Tncup703 said. I took the advice of my friend Ozz and used an air compressor to clear out the dirt and dust from the coils of our A/C units. The OEM one had started to freeze up when not in "Quick Cool", thus restricting air flow out to the unit. Now, all is good.

Thanks, Jim.

Used to freeze up the A/C on the old motorhome if I didn't have enough elect. Like trying to run both at one time, etc. Also, if you try and run it full blast and cool down too fast, it can freeze. Home A/C people advise against that. It should do better than a 10 degree drop in any event too.

If cleaning doesn't help.... DuoTherm A/C units have for years and years been notorious for freezing up when fan is on low and it's a bit humid outside. We always run with fan on high and never have a freezeup. The one time we did have a freezeup a few years ago we had the fan running on low.

I had a freezing up problem on our '05 297RKS and someone here said to take off the inside filter and make sure the A/c wasn't pulling hot air in from the attic. Sure enough, I could see where the tape job wasn't doing it's job. I had some of that foil type vent tape and redid what I could see, and that did the trick for me.
