To MDL's question -I'm sure you know by now, but the sparker is installed to light the pilot. Things are normal after that. it just prevents you from needing to get down into some contorted position to manually light the pilot.

The reason they don't do it for ovens is safety: There is a great risk someone would turn on the gas while the oven door is closed, start trying to ignite it, it might not ignite for several tries, while the oven is filling with propane. Then suddenly, the igniter finally works, and detonates a bomb in your kitchen.
If you choose to do this mod. be very, very aware of this real and dangerous threat. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't against the NFPA 58: Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code at some level.
We are all adults and can make our own decisions, but these codes were designed because somewhere, at some point, other adults like us found out the hard way what can happen without such safety measures in place.
