Wiring Problem
Our right turn signal and brake light kept blowing the fuse. Changed the fuse three times in the last three travel days. Stopped in Goshen and took a quick tour of the Mountaineer plant and got an idea how they run the wiring. Took some time but we think we have found and corrected the problem. The wiring is run thru the floor trusses and is not tied down or in a conduit. We removed some of the plastic covering the belly to expose the wiring at the rear of the trailer. The tail-light wiring is run around the ends of the I-Beams which are very rough. The wire for the right turn signal/brake light had the insulation chewed off in two spots and was shorting out on the I-Beam. We taped it up, covered the ends of both I-Beams and installed wire hangers at each beam to keep the wires away. We also installed some wire ties where the wires cross the trusses we could reach.
We made a mental note to do more if and when we have to get into the belly at other locations. None of the wiring in the belly (12v, 120v or guages) were installed in a conduit or even tied down. They had put a piece of corrugated plastic conduit over the truss, but since there were no ties, the wires found there way to the steel. If you ever have to get into the belly area, it would be worth checking as the wire insulation will eventually wear thru if it is loose and can rub directly on metal.
