Banks Speedbrake

Does anyone here use the Banks Speedbrake? If so, pros and cons? I'd like to add some braking power, but don't want to go the disc brake route on the trailer just yet.

I have one (the one with the switch). We love it. Only downside we came up with was Chevy voiding my warranty. Fortunately we didn't have long left on it when that happened.

I have a PacBrake PRXB that I installed 6 years ago on my 2007 5.9 Ram. Has worked flawlessly and love it. Use it most of the time whether towing or not.

Thanks for the link, Tom. Interesting reading. I'll dig into it and see if I can get it to work on an LMM.

sambam, there was an article in Aug 2012 Trailer Life that featured the BD Diesel's Controller that was a great write-up! Price was $695. Works on 2004 1/2 and newer Duramaxes. If you want the copy that I have, give me a PM with your address and I will send it to you in the mail. John

I had my ECM custom tuned by Duramaxtuner. It uses the factory variable vane turbo to act as an exhaust brake when needed, just like the new 2011+ models. It works great and there are no extra parts needed. In combination with the Allison transmission it is extremely effective. Installation is much easier also.

Many programmers also add this feature if you chose the Heavy Tow mode. The reprorgramed ECM is still a much better way to go. They allow you switch on the fly capability rather than having to shut down every time you want to change the tuning. Its worth looking into..

I have the Banks Speed Brake on my 2004.5 Duramax. Just arrived at the 7 Feathers Rally today and boy am I glad I invested in the speed brake. Went through lots of hills getting here. On many of the decents I didn't even use the foot brake. I have no ties to Banks, just a happy customer!

Good to read that those who have the Speed Brake are happy with it. It's still an option along with these other suggestions. Guess I have some research to do. Thanks everyone!

hello,
I have the banks speed brake on my 2007.5 gmc sierra ,LMM. I have a 2014 Montana which weights in at 14,800 fully loaded. I would never drive without that speed brake again. its the greatest thing going.
I think I paid $349.00 for it. I didn't want the dash display, I just got the switch. It has 4 settings on the switch and I always use number 2 and it holds me back on any hill I come to.never needed number 3,4. hopes this helps with your decision.
happy and safe camping season.
