chunking
I bought a MorRyde pin box for our Mountaineer last year and when I'm on a cement highway, that is in good shape, I still get some chunking. Now, I know it is not going to disappear completely, but it still seems excessive. When I'm on asphault, it's very smooth. Are there some other factors contributing to this "not so smooth ride"?

I once had a combination of a truck and a single axle pull camper which on a certain freeway did about the same thing. Looking back on it now I would say it was chucking. The wheel base and distance between the trailer tires were so perfectly timed with the seams of the road that it seemed to cause a jerking and pulling between the truck and camper which caused the dashboard in the truck to bounce and jerk around really badly. The distance between the wheels and the timing of hitting the seams was the only thing I could come up with for such a rough ride. I would guess that something similar like that might be going on.

I have a MorRyde also. Found that it didn't eliminate all roughness, but is sure a big and worthwhile improvement over the original pinbox. I agree on Bill's assessment of the probable cause to what you are experiencing. You find it on certain roads; I experience it with my boat as well. And it is annoying.

Jim & Betsy, I have always said "If you're afraid of the answer, don't ask the question". Didn't last long though with the DW. We added the MorRyde pin box after travelling from Alaska to Oregon. That took out quite a bit of the "Chucking" but not all, SO, at last years Spring Rally in Tucson, AZ, we bought a one ton Chevy dually and had a Trailersaver Air Ride hitch installed, pretty pricey, but it took out all but about 10% of the "chucking". We also bought the hitch to add longevity to the trailer and it's parts, only time will tell if we made a wise decision, we also had our axles cut off and had the MorRyde Independent Suspension added last fall. Hardly notice the trailer behind us at all. Not saying you need to go out and do this but it would be an option, albeit expensive option.....BTW: I do not work for MorRyde nor get any commission from them.......Hope this helps somewhat!!!!!

Our rig has not had a lot of chucking since we bought it. But what little it did have was almost always on concrete highways, and older concrete highways at that. Seems they used to pour those highways in sections. Now they seem to do a continuous pour eliminating most of those seams.
I installed a 5th Airborne pin box last July and that eliminated virtually all the chucking we had on the same stretches of highway.

Ditto for the TrailAir pin box for me. Made a big difference in the ride.

The TrailerSaver hitch and MOR/ryde Individual Suspension did it for us. If we are experiencing chucking, I don't notice it. Before the mods we experienced so much chucking that in 250 miles I would be completely beat up.

We still get a bit of chuck on rough roads with the Mor ryde. I would say 85/90% of the chuck is eliminated.

Beakyfudd,
Do you know the number of the rubber spring they installed on your pin-box?
I installed one on my Monte, I got it from Stiles' trade-in, a Big Sky. His Big Sky was heavier than my Monte, so I had to order and install the right rubber spring for my 5er.
There are two rubber spring body's a #4 and a #5 if the spring rubber is too rigid, it will not work well with your 5er.
It's possible that the dealer-installer did not order and install the right one. There is no information on this on their web-site.
Here are two links, one of my install showing the rubber springs and the two numbers, and one of the measurement information from their web-site.

Thanks to all for your replies/concern. Ozz, I ordered the pin box from Tweetys.com and did the install myself. What I ordered was the replacement for a Lippert 1621 pin box(mine). I will try to find out which rubber springs I have. What you suggest is dead-on with the rubber not flexing as much, as if the 5er was heavier. I sent an email to Ben Wiginton. I will report my findings.
On edit: I just looked at my emails, and Ben has replied to me saying that the default rubber springs are #5's, and therefore too stiff for my 5er. 5s are meant for 5ers over 14,000 lbs. I still need to check when I get home from work, so, we'll see. Thanks again MOC.

Thanks to all for your replies. After making sure I indeed have the #5 rubber/spring, I called the co. I bought the pin box from on-line. They have ageed to send the proper one to me at no charge and they don't want the #5. i can't wait to get it installed and feel the nice ride. Jim

Well, I received the replacement rubber and installed it last night. We are going away for the weekend, so I'll report-in with the final results next week. Jim

Just my .02$ but I'll bet some of it is your short box. Most of the posters (including me) tow with a one ton dually, crew cab or extended cab. Makes all the difference. I added a 5th Airborne pin box.

I don't believe the short box has anything to do with it. I fully believe it's in the hitch setup. A Reese hitch with a good air pin box will do a lot to minimize the chucking. On the other hand, some type of air ride hitch will be even better.

Keep in mind that no matter how much money you spend the chucking will NOT be completly eliminated. Our Mor Ryde pin box eliminates maybe MOST of it when properly set up and nominal road conditions.Rough roads and washboard roads can overcome most any device. Note that NOT ENOUGH pin weigh can cause chucking.

When we first got our Monty we noticed some chucking while towing it home. Once we loaded our things into it we rarely if ever notice any chucking going on now. maybe we’re just lucky.
