By LA do you mean Louisiana and you are stopping on the way to California? I can help with CA or L.A. but I'll leave the Texas, LA and Gulf Coast recommendations to others.
I did love Baton Rouge and New Orleans but we didn't do these by RV.

If you're lookin for parks to stay in I would check here--- http://campgroundreviews.com/regions/Texas/ ....But in San Antonio we stay at the KOA. The neighborhood isn't the greatest but the park is nice and the bus stops right out front and is only a $1 for a ride downtown, which is only a mile or two. We also like to stay at Galveston State Park now that they are getting back on their feet after Katrina, It's right on the beach. Galveston isn't really the greatest anymore but we like the st park. Corpust Christi has a whole lot more to do.

We have stayed at Braunig Lake RV south of SA, 10 minutes from the river walk..exit 130 off of I- 37. There is parking around the mercado and bus depending where you are going....there is also a park just west.
