Surgery Scheduled (Done Deal)
Saw the Podiatrist yesterday and I was given 4 options for surgery. Ranging from simplest to most difficult. The most difficult one is one I had on the other foot 3 years ago. They call it a reduction and it involves cutting out a portion of the bone in the big toe to open up the joint space so I can have some mobility with it without pain. It has gotten to the point that it is painful on long walks, which DW and I really enjoy. This is also the one that requires the longest recovery. but is more long term than the others. This is what I have opted for. Crutches for six weeks, then soft shoes and rehab afterwards.
Doc wants me to be around for six months. I agreed as this has to be done this winter. We will try and keep most of our schedule in tact for southern Florida but will probably have to drive or fly back here for followup.
Latest Update: Saw Podiatrist today (Dec 9th) and we have opted for a less painful procedure. Doc could not guarantee complete relief with the more difficult procedure, in fact could not guarantee any more relief than the simpler procedure, so we will go with the simpler procedure and hope for the best. I can still have the other procedure done at a later date if I am not satisfied with this one. Will do this and evaluate over the next year and possibly have something done next year. Should be back on the road sooner this way. Will have it done this Friday.
Thanks to everyone for best wishes and prayers.
Latest Update: Dec 12th. Had surgery done this am. foot sore but doc said he done good. Should get some relief while walking. Toe still a little numb but wearing off. Let's hear it for good drugs and a very good DW. Makes me feel like a king. Waits on me hand and foot (Oh no, did I say that? Must be the drugs)))))

Good luck phil. Anything that will get you back to where you want to be, physically, is a good option.

Phil,
Best of luck. That surgery sounds very painful.... I hope not too much! If you got to do then you got to do it! Sounds like you will be able to go on those long walks with no problem after you recover. We'll be pulling for you.

Ouch, ouch, and ouch again--just reading about the procedure gave me the shivers. But when you look at where you are now (unable to do a lot of the things you love to do), and where you'll be after it's all said and done ( Dancing With the Stars? ), it's a no-brainer.
Good luck! We'll be thinking about you.

I knew that you shouldn't have kick Cathy so much!LOL At least you wouldn't have to shovel snow in sunny Florida this winter. We'll be in the desert again. Good luck on the surgery. I know that Cathy will continue to spoil you like she always does.
