That time of year again

Was at the local Ford dealer today for an oil change. Walked out thru the new truck lot. First thing I noticed were signs; HAIL SALE. Every new truck on the lot (and there were a LOT of them) had hoods riddled with large hail dents. Two hail storms in the last two weeks really played havoc with them. Don't know what kind of discount you could get, but I suppose you may could get a good deal and then have it repaired.

Got enough hail at home to look like snow on the ground. But fortunately it was not much larger that marble size. Other nearby areas got baseball/softball size hail breaking windows along with the dents. Looking low across the hood I can see a few minor dents, but not too noticeable. Got lucky this go round.

Wow

I just (for grins) checked the dealer in McKinney, and they had a 2017 F350 DRW Platinum for 72ish, with hail damage.
If we were closer to buying, it would be a serious consideration.

I wondered how those new bodies would stand up in hail storms

When hail starts getting golf ball and larger, I don't think it matters the material. The cars didn't fare any better.

Was also at the Fiord dealer. They had a truck comparable to my 2008 that could be had for 63K before we used our friends and family plan . Tempting but this 08 has been a trouble free truck. It has never seen ice, snow, salt and looks new with 89K miles on it.We renewed our ESP and will keep the truck.

There was an F350 CC LB FX4 SRW Lariat (not even a King Ranch or Platinum) on the lot with a sticker of $71k+!!

My 2012 F350 has not reached 50,000 miles yet and also like new. Think I will be hanging on to it for years go come. How long can you keep extending your ESP?

Since we use our truck to off road and have the dents and Arizona pinstriping to prove it. I'd have probably snached one up. If I brag on my truck at all it's over what it's been able to do, not how it looks. Besides we spend a lot of summer time in Kansas and hail is only a matter of time. A lot of cars and trucks around here already this year that look like they got too near a drunken monkey with a ballpeen hammer.

Golfballs have dimples for a reason. A truck with lots of hail dents will see those same benefits...not that I suggest you roll it to see how much quicker it can turn on that axis. Another benefit to those that live in texas and arizona...you can make lots of poached eggs in those depressions and feed the whole campground. Cold weather fans...fill them with water and have a huge supply of cubes for your drinks.

I'm too finicky ... I'd be dam__ if I were to buy a new truck that was all beat up before I ever drove it off the lot. After declaring it to your insurance provider ... I'd guess insurance would be a bit tedious as if you were to get in a fender bender ... what's covered and what's on your dime.

It would have to be one heck of a deal to convince me to buy one. I got $14,000 off sticker for my current truck, at end of model year, with no dents. It would have to be $20,000 or more off to make me consider one with that many dimples.

Bill, you may be able to get some "once in a lifetime" deals right now on new trucks. There was just a news piece released about how much longer new vehicles are staying on the lots before selling nationwide, something like over 70 days. That along with having a bunch with hail damage could make a big dealer ready to cut some serious deals.

Since the hood extends over the front fenders, and from the ground you can only see the first few inches of the front of the roof, and the plastic strips cover the bed rails, you might get away with simply replacing the dimpled hood. Hmmmmm??

When I bought my 2015 aluminum F150 a guy that on the F150 had his truck in a hail storm along with 50 or so steel cars on his block. He said his was the only one that was not damaged.
