Potential Montana Owner

I recently purchased a Nissan Titan XD (Diesel) Truck and I want to make sure I get the proper Montana model that will be in the tow capacity of 12,640. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

None of the newer Montana's will be towable by your truck.

Sounds like you did what I did. Bought a truck for the things you currently need and then later decided you want to get into RVing. I lucked out though.

They don't make a Montana that your Nissan can tow! You need to buy a bigger truck.

Ill go one step farther. There has never been any Nissan/Toyota truck capable of towing any Montana.

Im sure some will disagree but, IMHO there has never been a 2500 series truck from anyone with the payload capacity to tow any Montana.

They, along with any heavy fifth wheel should be towed with a minimum of a 3500 SRW truck with a dually being the best option.

I agree and cant believe how many Montana's or SOB"s towed by a 3/4 ton truck. I did the math on my last rig and with 3 kids, the Bernese Mtn. dog and 2 cases of beer, i was right at the limit with a 1 ton. I upgraded to 1-1/2 ton F-450's 4 years ago. They have massive brakes, an actual "jake" brake button and no worries driving down the road.

At one time wasn't there a Mountaineer Travel Trailer?? Maybe that could be towed with a Diesel Nissan since it wouldn't have to carry the pin weight of a fifthwheel.

There are several available on RV Trader and his truck should be able to pull them.

I found out the hard way that even if your 2500 truck is capable of towing the weight and can handle the pin weight your single rear wheel tires can't.

NOT trying to argue here or start the dreaded "truck war" again, but have to ask... whats the difference between a 2500 SRW truck and a 3500 SRW tires?

I can not really answer that ?. However I can say that todays trucks come with a variety of different size tires and wheels. Could be 17-18-19-20" rims. But none of that really matters. What does matter is the fact that it is not a good thing to EVER overload a tire. All tires have a maximum weight they are rated to handle. Get your truck/trailer weighed and determine how much weight your rear tires are carrying. Compare that with to what the tires max load is. If your over, you are asking for trouble.

With a dually you will max out some other weight rating (payload ) before you max out the tires max weight...…..

Hi - We bought a 2008 Montana in 2013 and towed it with a 2008 Chevy 2500 HD Diesel with a Hemi Motor and Allison transmission. We towed our home through several mountainous areas with no issues whatsoever.

However, I am in agreement with our fellow Montana owners that the Nissan Titan will not be able to tow any Montana. We currently have a Nissan Titan SE that is too light to pull our rig. Right now our rig is parked, we are living in it full time and have made quite a few inside changes. But we know that we will need to purchase a more heavy duty truck to pull it when we are ready.

We wish you the best of luck. But you will need a heavy duty truck to assist you.

I think she may have meant Turbo rather than Hemi.

The lightest Montana (305RL HC) available new is about 12,000 GVWR with a 2500 lb pin weight. Max payload for the XD is about 2950 lbs, leaving you with 450 lbs for passengers, cargo and fuel. Also, max towing is 12,800 lbs. Not sure a Montana is right for you - check out some of the larger Cougar models, also made by Keystone.

Our TV is ram 2500 with 6.4 and 4.1. Payload 3300 and tow weight is 15600. Pull 3121rl. 12k dry.

On 3500 6.4 and 4.1. Payload 4400 and tow weight 14290

It all depends on how you set up your TV

Sometime a little slow up long grades but 65 most time with out a problem.
Wife reminds me that your doing 70. LOL

Another 5th wheel?

I ended up with a 2010 Montana 3465SA and pull it with a 1 ton dodge diesel. The Montana is just under 12,000 lbs. It's 37 feet but lighter than most other Montana's. I keep looking at the new Montana's and they keep getting heavier as the trucks get bigger. My thoughts are leaning towards a smaller 5th wheel....preferrably around the 30 ft length ... but as others have mentioned Montana doesn't make anything like that. I wish they did. After 8 years of pulling my Montana from BC to California, Arizona and even to the tip of the Baja one year the roominess has been great. We mix it up between resorts and boon-docking with two large solar panels. What I'm missing now is a smaller unit to go those places where you can't take the big rigs....State Parks and the coastline. I'm looking for a high quality 5th wheel like the Montana but shorter....any good brand names out there??
