hot water tank anode

my local hardware told me if I was to switch to an aluminum anode that is about 18 inches long and you just cut to the length which I think is 9 inches, that it will do the same job and not have to be replaced, does anyone now if this is true as the anode is about 24 dollars and the regular anode is about 12 and has to be changed about every 6 months, I imagine you would still probably have to flush tank regularly but over the years would be quite a savings if it works the way he says. thanks brian

My problem with that is that the Anode we use is designed to fail. The anode takes the corrosion instead of the water heater. I could be wrong, but my understanding of the process is that a deteriorating anode is necessary. Sticks and Bricks electric water heaters have the same issue.

Here is a pretty good article on this topic. http://www.martyranodes.com/content/...m%20Anodes.pdf
They seem to point to aluminum but I do not know if it will last twice as long.
