Best way to travel from Orland, Ca to
We recently purchased a 37 foot Montana - have a short bed Ford 250 with a Triton - need to know the best way to travel from Orland, CA to Northeast Iowa -
Will we be able to travel through the mountains around Reno and Tahoe?
Thanks
Susan

Iowafan (my hubby) said, "very carefully". He's from New Hampton, Iowa. Is that close to your destination? Judy

It depends on what type of roads you want to travel on. If you prefer Interstate Highways I80 through Reno all the way to Sacramento CA, then I5 north to Orland. Or cut off a few miles and take I80 through Reno to the junction of State Hwy. 20 through Nevada City CA, Marysville, and entering I5 at Williams CA, about 40 miles south of Orland.
Hwy. 20 is a two lane scenic route through gold country. Either way you'll go through Reno and bypass Tahoe to the north.

The very carefully is probably the best advise - we are very concerned about going through the mountains. Will probably do the 20 (Thanks Don and Claudia). We have done the 20 going West off the 5 North - curvey and narrow, but fine.
Our Iowa destination is National!
Happy and Safe Travelling to all!

You can go on line to the GoodSams site and go to trip planning and they will map you a route. What i like about it is there are several ways you can map it, plus the type of roads you want to avoid, also campgrounds and Nat. parks along the way.

Watch the weather, if I remember correctly, most of the northern routes over the mountains can still get bad this time of year.

Terry, Check under the North America MOC/Western Region regarding the MOC campout at Mt. Shasta in May. If you're in Orland by then you might consider joining us. It's only about a 2 hour drive drive north.

Thanks all of you MOC folks - still haven't decided for sure. AAA suggests we go back to I40 and across -
Next questions - what type generator do you suggest? Really want to get that purchased before we start heading back to Iowa.
Safe roads to all,
Susan Weller

We have two Honda 2000I's with the kit that twins them. I like them because they only weigh about 47 pounds each and when twinned together will run just about everything in the trailer.

Susan, which Triton do you have? If you have the V10, take any mountains you want. We towed 13,980 lbs of Montana up 8% grades and up Vail Pass on I-70 in Colorado with a '99 V10. It's not a problem. If you have the 5.4, then you're probably well over the ratings and the flatter routes would be the better choice. In any case, have a really nice trip.
