Just venting

I just spent most of the day removing the propane piping from the rig, prepping and painting same. The price we pay for these rigs, you would think a little coating on the pipe could be applied. Oh well I feel better now.

You removed the iron propane piping from your rig? Wow! That is a pretty big job. Why did you do this? Is it very humid where you live and or travel? I've never known anyone to do this sort of thing. Our piping still has a fairly heavy coating of paint or whatever it is that they put on those pipes. We live in a relatively dry climate and also travel mostly in dry climates. Just wondering if yours was so rusted as to be dangerous. Thanks for sharing. Dennis

Dennis, there was no coating of any kind, the pipe was rusty so I decided to fix before it got any worse

Our 2010 from the factory had a lot of rust on the piping and the axles really looked like solid rust. So I went under there and cleaned things up the best I could and spray painted everything in sight right in place with good old Rustoleum gloss black. Really made things nice under there and the Rustoleum has held up well. I just like the axles, frame and other metal parts to look black and not like rust.
BTW those factory axles are history now. I replaced them with upgraded axles and I painted them also.

The propane pipe on my 2011 is rusting badly also. I'll be doing the Rustoleum thing before winter.

I think the pipe is just black pipe, which is used for gas lines and sprinkler systems, that sounds like too much work for me, for something that is showing at the top of your basement compartment, I think I'll look at mine and study the job for a couple of years, then decide which to do first, that might also take another couple of years for that decision, then....................
I think you will have one of the squikeist clean Montanas on the road when you get finished with it Ken. two thumbs up for a job well done.

Mine was also badly rusted. Used a product called POR 15. Just used a brush and painted it on. It chemically adheres to rust. Expensive but very good on rust. Just Google it to find where to buy.

I think you're correct. The propane pipe is just plain old black iron/steel pipe. It is often buried in the ground just as it is. It would take forever and a day to have it rust to the point of failure. Granted I don't like to see rusted components either but I'm muct too lazy to work like Ken did!

Ken I am always amazed at how handy so many of our members are and the amount of work they go to to get a quality product out of their Montanas. Great job just way too much for me. Enjoy, Dennis.

I think what you did to make your Monty look super was a great idea. Now I hate to paly the nosey engineer, but being the propane system was entirely opened, did you have your
unit sent to an RV dealer to have the gas system re-certifiied?
