Albuquerque area

Planning a trip from Denver area to Albuquerque probably early October. Looking for suggestions for a good place around there for a couple nights. Not necessarily in town, but not too far away either. Also, any ideas for places inbetween; Taos, etc. Going to hit the one on top of Raton pass on I-25 for sure either going down or coming back.

Thanks!

Clyde

We stayed at a Passport America park ($14.00) which is on a hill overlooking downtown Albuquerque. Typical park nothing special but the view.
Here is their website.

We don't have any suggestions for campground as we are there during the balloon fiesta and stay drycamp across the street from the balloon field. If you will be there in early October you better have a reservation as the fiesta runs Oct 2-11.

We've stayed a couple of times the same place awaywego mentioned. Decent and the PA price is what sold us.

What is the place at the top of Raton Pass? That sounds interesting.

Steve, at the top of Raton Pass is the Cedar Rail RV Park. We stay there often to and from Colorado. It is just inside the New Mexico state line. You have to watch for the exit, especially coming from the north. It is a very nice place to stay.

There is an excellent campground just off I-25 about eight miles south of downtown. It is the Isleta Casino RV Park.. It is about a mile from the casino. You can walk to the train and go all the way to Santa Fe if you want, or just take it to Old Town. I can't remember the price but I do remember that it was very reasonable and really a pretty park.

Thanks for the input so far. Still looking for more. Something out of the city is what we're looking for. Not that concerned about the casinos. I used to spend a week of every month in ALBQ in the early/mid 70's. Traveled from there and back to Belen, Gallup, etc. Of course I wasn't camping then. Stayed at the Winrock most of the time; ate lobster at Paul's Monterey Inn after eating hot dogs all week. Per diem u know.

Padre got me excited about the Cedar Rail spot a long time ago when he first mentioned it. I have been close, staying at the state park @ Walsenburg. Camping for work, and I drove to Trinidad from there as well.

Been a long time since I saw the balloon festival in ALBQ; thought it was later in the month.

Suppose every decent park is full that whole week.

There is the Sandia tramway with a restaurant at the top. There are some hiking trails but after going from 6000 ft to 11,000 ft, you don't need to wonder why you are lightheaded and dizzy. Be careful of the altitude change.

It's been a while since we lived there or visited but DW and I used to take roadtrips around the area. I don't remember exactly where but I think out toward San Ysidro beyond the zia pueblo area, there were kilns where fresh Native American bread were baked and authentic blankets (very expensive) to be purchased.

With only a couple of days to visit, that pretty much covers my ideas. Have fun there.
