Ft. Collins, COLO and Poudre Canyon Hwy

We are planning a trip out West again and may come back from Salt Lake over though Hwy 40, but wanted to divert over Hwy 14, the Poudre Canyon Hwy. to Ft. Collins. Can anyone tell me if they recommend taking a 35FT Monty over the Poudre Canyon Hwy? Any insights would be helpful. Thanks for your help. John

Hello John,

We have driven that route several times. Once in early October and hit a snowstorm at Rabitt Ears pass. The road conditions are good but the traveling is slow because there are many curves. There is a lot of 35 mph driving. There are several pull outs to let other vehicles go by and if traveling slow you are expected to do this. I am sure you would enjoy the sights on the trip. Cameron pass is high but we have never found it difficult with any rigs we have traveled in. Last fall they were doing some work at the pass and that is done.

They have been working at Dinosaur National Monument to get the facility in better shape and I believe that work is about done. The drive from Vernal, UT to Steamboat Springs, CO, is easy but boring. Steamboat Springs is interesting but will take a bit of time to get through depending on what is happening there. Fuel is available at Craig, Steamboat Springs, Walden and then not until Ted's Place as you exit Poudre Canyon.

We live in Grand Junction, CO, and travel to Fort Collins many times a year and often take this route, with or without the 5th wheel, just because we enjoy the drive.

Hopefully some others will provide their opinions of the drive.

As stated by Dean, a bit of a pull. lots of curves but the views are great! May even see some moose in the Cameron Pass area. Several camp grounds on this route, private and National and State, all nice. Steamboat was home for us for 20 yrs, still spend summers at Steamboat Lake State Park as camphosts, so we know the area. Enjoy the trip!
