Kodiak Disk Brake Install Problem
Installing the Kodiak 7K Axle disk brakes on my 2955.
Everything goes fine until I try to install the calipers. The rotor won't turn at all. The outside fixed brake pad is firmly against the rotor.
Anyone have this problem during the install?
This install is as common as dirt so it should not be difficult, but it is....

Something is not put together right. I installed Kodiak Disc brakes on a couple unit and never encountered that. Look at your installation instructions again

I have confirmed every measurement from the specifications sheets to the actual installation. The space required between the rotor and the outside facing plane of the caliper mount should be between 1/4 and 1/2". I'm at 1/2 inch which puts the outer pad right against the rotor.
I'm going to call Kodiak tomorrow I just thought that someone else might have come across this also.

The easy one - is the rotor fully seated. That is, the bearungs fully on the land. The seal may be dragging heavily and not slipping up on yje land. A very thin film of grae on the seal lip may ease the assembly on.
The harder one - is the cup fully seated in the rotor bore. You can run a finger in back of the cup and feel the lane/stop.
And last - were you supplied the correct inner bearings and do you actually have a 7K axle on a 2955? 8 lug wheels aren't always 7k, a $$ lesson I learned a while back with SOB and a 5er about the same size.

Thanks Dave but everything is where it should be. Except the caliper
The rotor is exact. The bearing shoulder is exact. The face of the hub to the axle flange is exact. And seven other measurements taken from the Kodiak HRCM-133-7-8 Section View are right on.
If I had a 1/4" spacer between the axle flange and the caliper mount I would be gold. I think the caliper mount is made wrong as it is the only thing that doesn't measure right.
And yes, Standard #42 axle with 12X2" brakes and 8 lug 1/2" wheels with 25580 inner and 14125A outer bearings is a 7K axle on a 2955RL

Are those the bearing nubers that came out or are the what were supplied. The 25580 is 5200-6000 axle as is the #42 spindle design and the 12x2 brakes. !4125 bearings also aree used on the 6K axle. You sojld have a sticker on the LH side or possibley in a cabine as our Titanium had. The 100% way to know is via the number or weight rating stamped on the middle backside of the axle then a call to Dexter. Ours are stamped 5200 but they are actually 6K by spring packs and by outer bearing. Thanks Lippert/Keystone for underating our 5er!!

We had a '10 2955 and it had 6K axles until we upgraded to MORryde 7K IS.

My 5500 lb axles are per Dexter. I also have 8 lug hubs. I am not sure how to tell the difference between spring packs.

I got an email from Kodiak this morning.
"In some cases where the axle flange is welded to the tube it can sometimes be off. I have 7k spacers but we moved over the weekend and they are packed in box somewhere in our warehouse.. I believe they are 3/16 think which should be enough to get the bracket closer to the rotor. It might be a few day before they get unpacked though..,
Spacers are sometimes required on 7K axles.
I made some out of the center of the old backing plates and all is good now. Rotors spin free and install is almost done. Can't wait to try them out.

Did you use the provided spacers? The caliper bracket apparently needs to be spaced outward.

After a day of taking measurements I came to the conclusion that there had to be spacers required.
Asked etrailer where I bought the kits about the problem and they said I did something wrong and should call Kodiak.
Kodiak said I need spacers.
No spacers in the kit for 7K axle brakes. Would have been nice if they were there or said something about them.
When I got a bid for brakes from Stopyourtrailer.com they itemized the parts and I noted that they had spacers in the list. Maybe they know something etrailer should know.

Yes, my stop your trailer set came with spacers, ironically made by Kodiak. I didn’t need them for my trailers’ 7k axles. So I know Kodiak knows about them. 😉

It was Monday when I found out I needed the spacers but Kodiak just moved locations and Jesse there said he did not know which box the spacers were in so I just cut out the center of the old backing plates to make my own. I did not want to wait since my trailer was up in the air on jacks and there was an earthquake nearby.

I may do the same to get this done. The backing plates are 1/8" thick and would move it over enough to work. I'll fire up the plasma cutter in the morning. I don't think there's a market for used backing plates anyway. Mine are 4 weeks old, but I don't feel they are adequate for a trailer that weighs in near 17k.

It will work. I wish I had a plasma cutter instead of the metal cutting disk on my skillsaw.
You will be sooooooo glad you have disk brakes. My only problem was the crap double flare tool I borrowed from the auto supply store. My 50 year old flaring tool set was missing the 7/16 adapter and the one in the Chinese kit I borrowed was crap. Had to re do several double flares because of leaks.

It's all done. The plasma cutter took about 3-5 minutes to cut each spacer out of the backing plates and then a little grinding to clean the edges and paint.
I haven't test driven it yet, but it's bleed and topped off. I used the hose kit so I didn't have to mess with double flaring any hard lines.

I took my brakes and hubs to my RV parts guy and made him promise to give them to someone that couldn’t afford repairs to their rig. I’d gladly send mine to you but it’d be Wednesday probably before they got there? I’m in Oregon.

I appreciate the offer Mark.
I may try Craigslist to get rid of the like new drums. They only have about 2600 miles on them. Most of which was the 2200 mile journey from the factory to the west.
