North to Alaska!

The DW and I along with our 2 grandchildren are heading north to Alaska next June from Portland, Oregon. We expect to be gone about a month as we are only going to Skagway, Juneau and possibly Anchorage. I'm looking for suggestions on what to take or if you've been what did you forget to take that you desperately needed once you got there? Some questions we had are: should we take extra spare tires, a rock guard for the rear TV tires, extra propane, a five gallon can of fuel, how far apart are the gas stations, was diesel readily available? We also just purchased the Alaska Milepost and rented a video "Alaska by RV" which was well produced but left some of the questions unanswered. Any suggestions would be helpful.

mtmy2k, if you plan to drive to Alaska you sure will be going farther than you think. Unless you plan on going by ferry, you will have to drive through British Columbia and Yukon Territories before you ever get to Alaska. You can drive to Skagway from Whitehorse in the Yukon but the only way to reach Juneau is either by boat or plane. There are no roads. We never did have trouble finding Diesel and didn't have any tire problems although some did. We were there this year for three months and hardly had enough time. I guess you could drive it but you won't have time to see anything. The area you are planning to go shouldn't be too bad to drive unless there is a lot of construction going on. Bring lots of money. You can check our blog for some of the things you have questions on. It is a wonderful place to go. Good luck.

Be sure and take an electric space heater, even though it's June.

mtmy2k; probably take a good 7 days to get to alaska. fuel plentiful but expensive (especially in Canada). mud flaps on the TV would be great; roads not bad but there are stretches of construction. three ways to get to Juneau; BOAT, AIR or BORN there. an electric heater would be great (save on propane). If road signs indicate BUMPS, SLOW DOWN!!!!! enjoy trip

mtmy2k, You already have the Milepost -- that is indispensable. The other thing you will need is money. Tires, propane, diesel and most services are readily available, but most things are going to be more expensive than in the lower 48. I wish you had more time to spend up there. There are so many wonderful things to see and do. Try to get down to the Kenai Pensinula if you can. It is awesome.

We've been there 3 times, tho only once with our 5th wheel. It's a long way, took us 6 days to get to Whitehorse, then 2 more on to Achorage. We liked Valdez best, took a glacier tour rode the ferry to Whittier and back, awsome. Took extra spares, was a waste of time, and space. A smany said take a big wad of money, you will go thru if faster than you think.

It's a wanerful journey, you will talk about for years.
