We will NEVER leave home without the extra fuel capacity of an auxiliary tank for All the reasons expressed above.

Gravity fed here as well.

Read some pros and cons of gravity fed aux fuel tanks. Cons mostly on Transfer Flo's website as they don't sell gravity fed. What are most people installing? Gravity Fed? Have any got the fuel/toolbox combo?
The gravity fed are much cheaper and less complicated.

I didn't want to lose any bed space, thus my OEM replacement tank. Plus it works exactly like the OEM tank so there are no "complications."

Remember, the 2000 and 2001 Ford F-350 SRW only has 9900#GVW, not the 11,600# GVW of the newer trucks. With that extra 500 to 700# you may be over your GVW even with the 2955 which is a small trailer by nowaday standards. I had a 2001 Ford F-250 SRW and it only had a GVW of 8800# and I pulled a 2880 Montana which was about the same size as your 2955. I was over my GVW by 1000#.

We thought about it early on(12 years ago)We heard stories about fuel hard to find, expensive, etc. After the first year on the road we understood that they were just stories. The Ford holds 40 gallons of Diesel which is about 350 miles before we start looking for fuel stop in fact I don't think we have ever driven 350 miles without a stop.

In over 100K miles of towing all over the country we have never had a problem in finding a fuel stop. We do not see the need for a extra fuel tank ,If you do have the need then you do need the extra tank.

added a RDS 45 gal tank to my dodge with gravity flow kite and love it. I added an additional cap on the passenger side so I ca get feul easier. I always have the luck of pulling into a station and all the gasp umps are empty and the diesel pumps are occupied by economy cars

When pulling the trailer I always use Pilot and pull in with big rigs which is way easier than trying to maneuver around the standard fuel pumps.

I have a 2016 RAM 3500 dually long bed diesel, and I took out the stock 32 gallon tank, and put in the Titan 55 gallon tank in the same place. It sits about 2" lower, so I splurged for the kevlar 1/4" shield that goes below it, even though they suggested that was for off roaders? Now since we go from 300-400 miles per leg on our trips, I do not need to worry about fueling up with the 42' 5th wheel hanging on behind me. :-)

So I put the tank in my truck yesterday. As I said earlier TRANSFLOW tanks are not gravity fed. So I installed a in line Siphon bulb in the fuel line. It sit's neatly in the corner of the tank. I then cut my 3/4" overflow line(The line for when your filling up the main tank, and extra fuel runs over and back into the tank) and installed a tee and a ball valve (for easy removal, should I have a need) So 2 pumps on the bulb and I have a constant gravity fed fuel system. I also installed a clear in-line fuel filter between the tanks. I think I'm going to like having the range that 117 gallons will give me.

They also make there tanks out of aircraft aluminum, Bottom line is they are a great tank and that's why they are so much $$$. I posted above about how I made mine a gravity flow tank. most of the time we don't have an issiue with finding fuel, but sometimes it's a pain in the __ and also if I can buy when it's cheap instead of when I'm empty, that makes the wife HAPPY

I'm one of those still having the debate in my head about Aux. tank or not. They want real money for those and the OEM replacements are even more expensive. I towed 20k miles on a western trip last year and never had any issues. I try to only go 300 miles a day or about 6 hours. So I start with a full tank and usually can make it to the next CG. That way I can buy fuel away from the expensive truck stops. Of course, with the Pilot RV Plus card I get 8 cents off the cash price, so when I need to fill up for a long drive day, it's not really an issue.

So when I win the lottery, a OEM replacement tank is on the list to buy

I've wanted to put in a TitanTank for years, on both of my last two trucks, but the cost has kept me from doing so. I've also thought about the much less expensive route to go which is a rectangular 9" aluminum tank that will stand behind my toolbox. They typically store about 45 gallons of fuel which with my 37 OEM, will give me about 80-82 gallons of usable fuel and give me more fuel than a Titan and costs much less. Just been trying to find the one I like.

I understand, My tank sold for over $1600 +tax when new and even more now, plus install unless doing it yourself isn't cheap. So yes I was just like you, "on the fence" But my 77 gallon "TRANSFERFLOW TANK" fell in my lap and knocked me right off the fence. It was free, as my OP stated. So I don't think it would have been high on my list if I had to go out and buy one. But if I were buying one, I would buy from "TRANSFERFLOW INC. I think they are one of the best fuel cells out there, and that's not a place to cut corners or penny's. Also I would buy the one with 40 or 50 gallons and has the tool box on top. After talking to a guy at Transflow and watching there video I bolted my tank to the bed and spent right about $100 on fuel line, fuel filter, Stainless steel pipe fittings and hose clamps and 11/2 hours later I was buying diesel I had 20 Gal. in my 40 gal. tank so another 20 Gal. in the main tank, and I put 75 Gal. in my 77 gallon Aux. tank for a grand total of 117 gallons. With my last SOB 5ver I averaged 13MPG when towing If I still get that average with our 2955 that's a average of 1521 miles. Thats huge, so even with the bigger Montana if the MPG drops a little, I still don't have to start looking for a good price on fuel until after driving 1000 miles or so. These numbers are really sounding good to me. I think the advantages are going to outweigh the disadvantages. We had a trip planned to leave next week for a month long stay at our off grid property in Washington. But for medical reasons our time went from a month to 2 weeks. So now we're leaving next week for Oregon, We are spending our 2 weeks looking at property in the southern half of the state. Thinking of selling our house in California and paying cash for something in Oregon. Anyway I'll post how the extra fuel works.

I have a cheap solution that works for me. I carry a 5 gallon can. If I get too low on fuel which I have once I stop and add the 5 gallons. That will take me 50 miles. I should be able to find fuel in 50 miles even in Wyoming.

The way they make fuel cans these day's I'd rather walk. The safer they get the more I hate them. I know your joking, but have you tried to pour 5 gallons of fuel from a newer safe can into your truck? Only thing their good for is the generator.

I'm so lucky. I own a machine shop and can make a spout that you can actually use.

I have one of those Yellow 5 gallon fuel cans. What a pain. Takes forever to empty and end up with diesel down the side of my truck and on my shoes.
Going to start pricing out an auxiliary tank next week so it's in place for our trip south in November. One concern is the extra weight as I'm already at or slightly over the GVW

I'd thought of that but I already carry 5 gal of gas for the portable generator, which I've never used on a trip. I also carry the generator which I've never used on a trip.

I look at it like this. I like truck stops for the convenience, quick fill up, Bulk DEF, and fast food. If I paid $0.20 more for diesel, which I don't due to Pilot RV Plus card, it would take over 200 fill ups to pay for the $1600 OEM replacement tank. It's only on the rare travel day that I push beyond 300 miles to even need to stop for fuel at all.

Also for the price of the extra tank, I could buy 72 bottles of Buffalo Trace bourbon. Much more important.
