Will insurance companies cover you if?

I failed my Non-Commercial Class "A" skills test today in California. To see what the test entailed look at my other topic called "Registering Monty in California bought in NV". I'm wondering since I don't think 90% of the people out there towing these rigs could pass this test, how will their insurance company cover them if they get into a major accident if they are registered in California, but don't have an NCCA license? Will AAA or other insurance carriers even care? I mean look at our first trip we are going on, thru Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. None of these states have these silly skills tests? Anyone have any thoughts? I know, if I moved one mile east from where i am now, I could live in Nevada, and not worry about any of this!!

My understanding you must be in compliance with the requirements of the state the rv is registered in.

I ask my Allstate agent if I was covered if I was overweight. He called Allstate. They said you would be covered. If you go through a red light, speed, are overweight, or drive drunk you are covered so I don't know why you wouldn't be covered wit the wrong permit. As well as I remember if they insure you you are covered.

Insurance companies are infamous for looking at ways to get around paying for a claim, if you know that you are in violation of your states regulations I would be concerned. This is already on record because you took the test.

If the insurance company has issued a policy (at least in California) then you have coverage. Whether they keep you insured without compliance after an infraction may be a question later.

What's crazy, is I have not had a ticket in 36 years. Never done drugs, never been hand-cuffed or arrested, and this is the treatment I get? You buy a big Ol' RV to finally go visit our Great Country, when you are retired, and I guess I will be doing it as a criminal??????

Is it a written and driving test? WA state no requirement unless you haul commercial.

It's not a hanging offense! If they can't hang you no big deal. All they are going to do is fine you, who cares.

And likely a civil suit if you were in an accident. Involved in an accident five years ago outside St. Louis. Not my fault. Still, was escorted to nearest weigh station to verify weights, and results part of the accident report. Not good if not properly licensed.

Go to your insurance agent and talk to them.

What part of the test did you fail and will they retest you on this part so you will pass? I know the Calif DMV is a royal pain to deal with but I would think a retest is a option. I'm glad I have a class A already this sounds terrible.

I'm going to start another topic about insurance, and what happens if you don't have a Non-Commercial Class "A" license. I failed the skills test, and my Class "A" CHP escort that took me there, failed on two attempts to do the Alley docking maneuver they required me to do, and was trying a 3rd time, when they came running and screaming out of the building saying we could not practice, even though I had already failed. He just said let me try it, I know they will get mad, but let me see if I can do it? The alley dock was two yellow lines 12 feet apart and 38 feet deep, and you were supposed to have the rear of your 5th wheel end up in the end zone which was only two feet wide. The problem was there was a perpendicular blue line you could not cross over that was 90 feet from the entrance of the alley dock, and a red parallel line on the right side you could not cross over that was only 10 feet from the alley dock. So essentially you had to start perpendicular to the alley dock, and bck up and approach from your left side. But the hitch was no part of your trailer's rear end or wheels could break the imaginary barrier of the yellow width of the alley dock. So the back end of my 5th wheel sticks out some 13' 6" from the CL of the rear wheels. There were no cones to visually see, except at the end of the alley dock. So you were supposed to be able to curve into this spot, and not break that imaginary barrier. I told the guy I'm not a beer delivery truck? Anyway, I could not do it, and failed. My Class "A" CHP failed on 2 attempts? So good OL' Kalifornia. I only live one mile from Nevada. Maybe I should move there? NV, Oregon, WA, and Idaho where we will be traveling next have none of these silly requirements.

I recommend moving. There are many other advantages to not being a CA resident.

You might also consider borrowing a smaller trailer to do the test with assuming you have access to one.

I got a class A non commercial in 2010 because I was concerned about rowing a trailer that weighed over 15,000 lbs. My trailer at the time was 10,000 lbs. I simply took the written test and was issued a license. Only requirement was a yearly physical. Anyway lost my wallet and license in August of 2017. Went into the DMV and they would only issue me a class C because 2 year lapse without a physical. I now tow a 12,000 lb montana. I believe I am legal. My insurance company State Farm never asked anything about a license for all they know I don't have any.

Just looked this up on CA DMV web. "With a class C license you may tow a 5th wheel trailer that weighs less than 15,000 lbs."
End of discussion. If you do not believe me Google it yourself.

The alley dock was not my favorite had to do it taking my CDL and it is what we do every time we back a RV into a back in RV spot.We always ask for a pull through but knowing how to back these things in is handy. We in effect do a alley dock when backing into our driveway and alongside the S &B several times a year and when we back into out Florida lot for the winter. Ohio is our Domicile and a special Rv license or test is not required.
