So how do you get started?

So how do you get started to workcamp? Would a CG be willing to train a newbie? Is there a publication by CG's looking for workcampers?

We got lucky. Thousand Trails was recruiting at the Big Tent in Quartzsite and got us into a neat summer job.

We also signed up for the news letter at http://workamper.com. That site puts out news of job openings several times a week. The site also gives you the capability to build a resume on-line that prospective employers can see.

Another site to visit is http://www.recreation.gov. This one can get you into national parks all over the country.

These are just a couple of locations to explore. Once you start looking, you will find that there is an abundance of positions available as long as you are ready, willing and able.

workcamping is easy. just find a campground that needs help and apply.

keep in mind that some campgrounds will be great and others will not work for you (i.e. they lied about hours or duties).
Be specific on what you want to do and if you do not want to do toilets (many people don't do this) make sure they are not going to have you doing that activity.

good luck

Another website we use often is Volunteer.gov. You can put in the state you want and then the agency you want and up pops what's open now. If you don't find anything that interests you put in another agency. Workamper.com is another we use and since we like to pick and choose I copy the ads we seem to be interested in this year (when we already have a gig) and then check them out (as we travel) and apply next year if we like what we saw. When we get a call from our resume with workampers we will almost always already have a job for this season so I apologize, thank them for thinking of us and ask them to keep us in mind for next year. I also add these to our file for the next year (the file is a word doc on my computer). Many folks have found their first work camping gig by just asking in a campground they are in that they like. Many times campgrounds are one couple short and you can get a short gig, but most important a recommendation you can use down the line. Good luck, it's a lot of fun and definitely better than sitting home watching old episodes of Judge Judy. If we can be of further help, email us.

Here's another site for you, Workers on Wheels

http://www.work-for-rvers-and-campers.com/

There are all sorts of jobs out there, not just at campgrounds. I believe this is where we found our current gig.

Looking for and acquiring a workamping job is just like applying for a "real" job. Create a resume with focus on skills, experiences and attributes as they relate to the workamping life.

Get everything in writing. Many campgrounds use a verbal agreement, but still ask for the specifics of your responsibilities and what you will receive in return in writing, even if it's simply an email.

Good luck and have fun!

I second the warning to be careful about specific jobs and hours required of you in any workcamp or park host job. Sometimes a contract stipulating 25 hours BETWEEN two people per week quickly turns into 50 - 60 hours PER PERSON per week, with your days occasionally running until midnight or later, depending on what kind of crowd you have in the park. And, instead of meeting and greeting guests, you might be surprised at being assigned to full-time maintenance jobs and having to scrub and disinfect [fill in words describing the worst possible human waste] from toilets, bathroom floors, and the walls, sometimes three times a day.

We have had some very good experiences doing volunteer park hosting and want to do it again. We'd also like to do some workcamping. But now we know what to ask before signing a contract, and we also know that we would not hesitate to leave a position if the reality didn't match a "pie in the sky" job description.

We fell into it last year. We pulled into Lake Powhatan, just outside Asheville, NC and were recruited before I could pay for our site. They were short-staffed. The "requirements" became other than what we were originally told. We gave them notice and went out to Colorado.

It's one of our favorite campgrounds (we have family in Asheville) so on our return in July we went back to get a site. Managers had changed, the rules changed, and we ended up hosting for the rest of the summer.

This was our first experience camp hosting. We're now making arrangements to camp host at Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia.
