Veterans 'Choice program' Got my card

This is a great deal for us travelers, or if you live 40 miles away from a VA Hospital or clinic.
Or: If you have to wait more than 30 days for an appointment..
If Mountains or water is an obstacle to travel, or other travel hardship..
You can go to your, or any? (may be restrictions there) Doctor and get VA care paid for (with pre-approval)
Read about it, as there is more to it I am sure.
VA Choice Program

Here is all the info:

Thanks Ozz, that's a good thing to know as we are living in Canada for a few months. I did cut my finger two months ago and went to Bellingham ER and was taken care of and so far no bill.
You are the man that seems to come up with a multitude of great bits information!

As I understand it, preapproval is required except for life threatening emergencies- JMHO- Don

Don, that is true as I know it.
Also I know that the local physician has to be approved, or.. Has to have approval from the VA.
I looked at one location more than 40 miles away from Phoenix in a small town, there were Dentists, eyeball Dr.'s, Shrinks, and so on. I was surprised at the amount in such a small town.
Interesting.

I have been going to the VA for about 10 yrs now. The VA has sent me to civilian care for ultra-sound, colonoscopy, and have been getting allergy shots for over two yrs. now. The only thing is that the VA can really get things screwed up paper-wise. I have spent a lot of time getting them straightened out and on the right track. They forget to pay bills and then I get a bill from Dr. But I never have had to pay a nickel yet so all is good. Lucky to have the VA. Oh, and I live near Austin and Temple, Texas where there are two huge VA sites. They send me elsewhere when they cannot provide a particular service (ALLERGY DR) or if they cannot get to me in a certain amount of time.

OZZ, since I'm the Commander of my home town American Legion I get all of these notices and I go to the County Veteran's Service Office and talk to him also. He was telling me that the plan is good but they really do not how to handle it yet. As was stated, you do have to have approval from the VA to see that local doctor or whoever you need to see and that approval can take some time. I use the VA for major things but since I'm on Medicare and also have to have a private health insurance company because the DW has not reached the age yet, I usually just go to my local docs and clinics and all is covered. I don't feel I need to use the VA most of the time because it does take a lot longer to get through the VA process most of the time!

I need the meds from the VA, my Medicare policy does not include that. But I am doing the same as you are for the most part.

My experience has been if you are 65 or older, it's much easier to use Medicare.

My meds thru the VA cost $8 for a 30 day supply (each) They usually send 90 day supply.

VA, once in, is ok for getting meds but about nothing else. like Tlighting said, if 65 use medicare for quick service.

Agree with mazboy. Use primary care for meds, only (great price).

I have used mine. I was able to get appt after 4 tries. Like the VA , not easy, takes persistence. Very slow and cumbersome. Even the Dr commented on difficulty talking to them. Got it done, but not easily. Unimpressed, just another layer of bureaucracy, IMHO.

One has to stay on top of them, first you need preapproval( try getting them to answer the phone is the first hurtle). If you do get an approval getting the Gov. to pay the bill after service is the next problem. Most providers and their collection agency's aren`t on a 120 day billing cycle like the GOV. In the meantime your credit rating will be threatened by the collection agency. This is a good concept for us but you have to remember who are administrators of this program. Think VA claims backlog. I have applied and herd nothing.

The VA is typical of government operations- overworked and underfunded- When uncle needs you, he promises the world but when the current crisis subsides congress starts cutting back as usual- JMHO- Don
