Exercise, What Do You Do?

Just wondering what does everyone (anyone) do to keep fit while on the road? We are not full time but would like to be in a couple of years. My wife & I try to make an effort to eat right & work out as much as possible while camping. Don't get me wrong Im not here to preach, & I know camping is usually about R & R, but it is important to stay healthy so we can camp longer into life. We start by taking the dog for a few mile bike ride while he runs along side of us, he loves it! Next I do stretches & push ups while my wife goes through her routine, then breakfast & we're ready to start the day. Once you get into it you almost feel guilty not doing it

Walking, hiking in the mountains out west are the main things since I can no longer do the 100 mile tours on the bicycle or training to do them. Would still be skiing except we are never around cold weather anymore since we fulltime. Sailing for relaxation.

Hardly anything now. We have over the years, Hiking, backpacking, walking, running , biking, hunting, shooting belonged to gyms. We did everything. We are now 82 and have bad knees, bad back, bad hearing, poor eyesight. The exercise was fun but did nothing .My exercise now is fixing things that break on the Montana.

Walk two miles everyday, seven days a week and ride a bike several miles as many days as possible.

I had an orthopedic surgeon tell me do NOT run. He had been a runner until he saw firsthand what it did to your joints. He said walk so that is what I do and enjoy it. I walk here in the country so I get to walk in the fields and woods. I see deer, turkeys, bear and all the small game and that is what makes it fun.

Wife and I are early 50's and very active. We are not full timers and honestly have no intentions of ever becoming so but we spend a ton of time in our campers. We don't have a set exercise program in place but mix it up with things we love to do. Hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, fishing, swimming etc...

We both are of the mindset of seeing and doing as much as we can while we are still able. R&R is not part of our camping/traveling routine at this point in time. We rest when get back home.

We have an 84lb Irish Setter. I'm fairly certain he caught and swallowed the Energizer Bunny when he was a pup. A 5 mile bike ride is just enough to take the edge off for him. Had a lady recently yell to me while riding past her for the fourth or fifth lap around the campground "You know your just building up his endurance!" Sadly, I think she was right.

R&R is not part of our routine.? Maybe I'm sadly mistaken but that's exactly why we do it. The last thing I want is a routine/itinerary while camping. To us its all about getting away from the daily hustle and bustle that life throws at you.

We are about as opposite of "routine" as one can possibly get when camping/traveling. We have only one rule while camping/traveling.
NO ALARM CLOCKS!

We're not satisfied sitting on our rears in a camp chair or sightseeing through the windshield of a truck. We want to be on that distant mountain or waist deep in that beautiful trout stream. Not just look at it.

No right or wrong way to do it. Just get out and do it.

We're going to do it while we can.

We walk every morning when camping. If there is a golf course I will play a few rounds. A couple of weeks ago we were at a site in central Texas for 6 days and I played 5 rounds. Also every evening I do 12 or 16 OZ arm curls for a hour or so.

Jeffba - I am willing to help develop your upper body strength by offering my unit up for a wash. I will do end caps. You do the sides.

Our senior dog Fern (~14 yrs old) has a hard time walking. Stairs and ramps are a no-go. We bought a harness carrier and I tote her around like a suitcase to get her to a place where she can potty. Lifting her 50 lbs and carrying her is a workout for me! Everything else about her is working great for her age - just the legs don’t work so good anymore. She is part of my workout now.

If you want to work on your 100 meter dash, tell the DW you used her toothbrush to clean the tracks on the shower. I find at 100 meters her aim is bad. oh and while you are out bring back a new tooth brush

Do some research on kettle bells. I carry a 20 lb one in our RV. You can get in a good core workout, resistance training, etc in a 20 minute or less workout. Donít need much space. Iím almost 66 and have been using one for 10 years.

I take Bob Dog out for a daily walk once in the morning andc once in the afternoon if it is not to hot out here at La Posa South in Quartzsite, Arizona. About 1 1/2 miles each trip.

Next April we are moving and I have a DW that is a Disney fanatic and moving within 5 miles of Disney. I don't think I will have any problem with exercise.

We are about 20 mins from WDW and both worked there for awhile folks do not realize how big WDW is you will get plenty of exercise at the parks.

Great to see fellow campers looking to stay fit! We stay at a seasonal site in the Catskill mtns in NY and we have lots of great hiking opportunities, one of our favorite is hiking up to a fire tower. My wife likes to always have a destination so the fire towers work well & during the season there are volunteers at the tower to give some history. I know compared to out west the catskills are small but they make for a nice work out & only take a few hours so we still have a good part of the day left.

I'm glad someone asked this question as we are in our late 50's and retiring in 2 years. Won't be full time, but expect at least 1/2 time. When we travel for business now, the availability of a good workout room in the hotel is important to us. When camping we stay at KOA's mainly and with the exception of the laundry rooms, there are no fitness facilities. We have equipment at home, but were thinking of joining a nationwide gym for when we're on there road. We get 3-4 miles a day hiking with the two siberians, but really need something more to stay in shape.
