fifth wheel grease option

Is there an option besides grease on the fifth wheel? I thought there was a teflon disk to put on the king pin.

Mike,
As Garyka indicated the teflon disks can be found at almost any RV supply outfit. They are great! In the 5 or 6 years we've been RVing we've used two of them. I believe there may be a couple of king pin sizes so make sure you get the one that fits your pin. Then again CRS may be making me remember or not about the size!

Dennis

Travel safely,
Dennis

Actually. I believe it's nylon, which is self lubricating. I have used one from day one, but still lube the pin.

Agree...the pin still needs lub.

Tom,
Don't we all need "lub"?

If you lube the pin, with or without the nylon disc, make sure to scrape it off, clean it and replace with new grease occasionally, especially if your truck is used without the trailer as the grease will atract dirt and grit and make it worse than nothing on it.

Contrary to the views of some RVers, the king pin itself needs a light coating of grease. This is in addition to the teflon disk that everyone uses. The teflon disk allows one to use the face of the hitch snugged up to the king pin without using grease. Grease on the king pin and face of the hitch is a mess when you bump up against it (and you will, no matter how careful you are). You do need the light coating of grease on the king pin itself because here you have metal against metal -- the metal of the king pin and the jaws of the hitch. It doesn't take much grease, just a little.

I learned something with this thread. I have been using the teflon disc for 8 years and so never greased the pin for either of our two 5th wheels. Now I will. Thanks, all!
