Kinda like a fire extinguisher. You may never need it, but if you do, you need it badly....
Just a thought.

As others have mentioned, if you're going to or through Canada, check! Pepper spray is a no-no, as I recall. We crossed the border 9 or so times last summer on our Alaska trip, and our friend had a permitted (Canada) shotgun in his rig. No problems or delays at any crossing because he had his Canada permit and declared each time. Don't try the same w/a hand gun, as others have said. They do not take a joke very well! We were never searched, but I talked w/others who spent hours waiting while their rigs were pulled into sheds/garages for full Customs searches going into Canada. Be smart?!

Good Evening All,
I'm trained, legal, and I carry.
It is my intention that it be MY choice what I do with what I carry, and never be in a situation where I didn't, but surely wished I had. Because it is exactly those types of situations that you or a loved one might not be able to recover from!

As others have noted, pepper spray is not permitted in Canada, but Bear Spray (same stuff) is.

Richfaa, there is no more frightening a sound in the dark than to hear the Rem 870 pump cycling one into the pipe . You may want to re-think the guage though and drop down to the 16. I know for a fact it will not penetrate two layers of drywall and is sufficient to stop a man at close range . practical experience,,,10 years behind a badge in south Louisiana .

Garin1..good information. That is why we went to lower powered target loads.have not yet been able to test the penetration of the loads at say 30 feet or so But will soon as the weather allows us to get down to the range. I had guessed that about two layers 3/8 drywall would be about equivalent to a camper wall..what do you think???

Garin1, you can still find a 16 ga? 20 ga double works too.

When I was in Up-state New York last summer a friend took me to his favorite gun shop to look around. They had a 12 ga. shotgun load specifically for home protection. These where shorter than a standard 2 ¾ inch shell, so more would fit in the magazine, and lower power so they would not penetrate walls. Good for protection in residential areas, poor choice for bears. I was going to buy several boxes until I remembered I was going back to Detroit through Canada. I’ll try to get the manufacturer’s name unless someone here already knows it.

Dave..here's the plan.. I take the 870 with me to the RV show..We tell T&C we need to perform a penetration test before we buy.I blast the camper wall with my 12 guage target load. We check for penetration..will save me a trip to the range. Good plan.Hummmmmm///Or what...

OK, after making a few calls I got the info. These shells are not exactly what I thought they were. Here's the link so you can make up your own mind.

Sweetfire..Don't think that will work..However.. I can load a shell down or have my local gun shop do it.Phase one, test the target loads see what happens then develop a lighter load if needed. I will bet someone makes a load that we are looking for.'Research time...

I wasn't too impressed by their own admission of functioning problems in some shotguns. Guess I'll just have to make sure I hit my target, then over penetration shouldn't be a problem.

There are also fragmenting loads available for various caliber sizes. How well they frag on the thin walls of a 5er, I don't know. But thats what I am buying.

After some home work and asking questions . I came up with the following..Winchester AA, Low recoil, Low Noise target load.
12 Guage, 2 3/4 inches 26 gram 8 shot. warning on box says do not use in semi automatic shotguns as they will not operate the action. I am told these are used in some circles as riot control loads. We will not be able to field test the loads till the weather clears which could be a couple of Months but are told they should meet my requirements.

Hey Guys,
I just bought 500 rounds of the above mentioned ammo yesterday only 7 1/2 shot, I test shoot about a 100 rounds every Wed. afternoon. As for protection 00 buck does the job, 12 pellets about the size of a 9mm round.

Bill, that will also go through a lot of aluminum sidewalls w/ insulation w/in 75yds. I think these guys here are trying to figure "effective protection" with limited collateral damage to other RVs in a campground. Unless I'm misunderstanding?
But I do agree, Bill. You don't even have to let them get very close with '00 to get their attention. To heck that "wait 'til you see the whites of their eyes" stuff!

If you are test firing that light load stuff let us know what you think ofthe penetration power. We are trying NOT to blow holes in the camper wall and two or three campers down the line. I figure that two sheets of 3/8 drywall equal the side wall of the Montana camper.
I was going to test the penetrating power of the light loads at 30/35 feet max. that would simulate the inside of a camper. I was going to start at about 10 feet and work back to 30/35 feet. If the need arises I want to hurt the bad guy..not my camper neighbors.
