Is a trip to Alaska hard on the 5th wheels? We would be leaving from Washington State mid Summer. Thanks for your help.

Driving in Alaska is hard on everything with wheels. From what I've read, leaving mid summer may be too late a start. Go the the search at the top of the site, and type in 'Alaska' and you will get quite a few results that will provide some guidance.

Driving up to Alaska can be hard on your unit, but as long as you slow down for the frost heaves, which are marked you should be okay. We have been up to Fairbanks twice and once to Anchorage and Homer without any problems. We have also been to Whitehorse Yukon 4 times and have driven The Dempster up to Inuvik NT without even getting a flat tire. Take it easy and you should have no problems. As for leaving mid summer, it depends on how much of Alaska that you want to see on this trip and if you plan on going up a second time.

Are reservations needed at campgrounds in Alaska during the summer or are there usually open spots?

Stop early and u7sually you can get a spot. We like to dry camp a lot. Some of the big supermarkets will let you stay over night. Have been 3 times and want to go in 16 if health holds up.

I am leaving the Seattle area around Aug. 1. I think the weather history says August is dry and September is pretty dry. I went 6 years ago and rained about 29 or 30 days during time in July.
However, normally Fairbanks has first snow around Sept 22 (I think if memory serves). But last year I think they got 20 inches around Sept. 1.
I will be leaving around Sept 7 or 8 for home, so hope the normal hold up!

As previously stated AK is tough on anything with wheels. The roads tend to be a little on the neglected side.

From someone currently living in AK a few things I might offer ensure your rig is tip top before getting here and carry a few additional maintenance parts with you (eternabond, sealant, SCREWS, etc) parts can be a bit fewer and farther between and maintenance intervals tend to go the other direction haha.

Not sure what your intended route it is but through Southeast, AK campgrounds for large rigs can be hard to come by and a lot of rigs boondock in road pulls, store parking lots etc, so full tanks and a good generator come in very useful.

All the negative nancy aside it is truly beutiful here and if your an outdoorsman of any kind you will be in heaven. Its a truly unique part of our country.

If you roll through Ketchikan on the AMHS look us up we are at Clover Pass Resort!
