How many tires??
This past weekend we were camped next to a couple with a SOB, and this was the first time I had seen dual tires on a 5th wheel. In talking with them they had just left Las Vegas heading to Florida and we started talking about tires. In short, he walked into a tire store and asked the salesman if he worked on commision and he replied yes I do. Well the guy told him "I am going to make your day".
He repalced every tire on the SOB and his dually truck. Yep count them up, that is 14 tires!!! Glad that was on his dime and not mine.

Was there some particular reason for the replacements? Was he having problems, or were the tires worn? Are you saying he had 8 tires on his 5ver? (On 2 axles) I've seen 6, but not 8.

If I remember right, Newmar made a tandem axle dually 5th wheel, but not sure if they still do.

Back in October I saw a large 5er with tandem axles and duallys on each axle. Looked strange but effective. Should be good for mud, sand, and swamps. Should have taken some pictures.

you asked for it here you go the mother of all 5th wheels that right you guy 8 wheels it even has a drawer in the back for the spare tire so that make it 5 and at $241.00 a tire and $260.00 a tire for the truck and diesel running about $4.05 gal I would it up on blocks and make it a house boat. hahahahahahahah.

Quite the opposite of what we would need. Two powerful furnaces and only one AC unit. That's headed in the wrong direction for us when winter hits.

That trailer is awesome... With a GVWR of 20,000 lbs, no wonder it's got double duallies (I couldn't see the details of the wheels in any pictures but it's in the text)! I agree with DQDick that with all them goodies, it needs another A/C. I think the weight surpasses even a Ford F-450 dually which at last check had a 26,000 CGVWR. If the trailer takes up 20,000, that leaves on 6,000 for the truck and the F-450 weighs more than that and would therefore be beyond the weight ratings.
This rig needs an MDT or HDT and more license than I'd care to get. But I'd sure like to get invited for visit and tour!
To Steve Underhill - I guess he didn't do the spares.
I wonder if duallies are better than a third axle. I have seen that on a turn and there are three axles that one of the axles will often be in the air depending on the height of the entryways and angle of the turn which means the other tires must be able to handle the extra weight. I'm guessing two axles might fare better in this case and wonder if all tires stay on the ground.

That's a nice 5ver, but a 2001 model. I wonder if they still make it? If you look at the slide show, it shows the 8 wheels clearly.

I thought Newmar was one of the victims of the recent recession and they went under like so many other RV manufacturers so I think you'll only find preowned or older units.

no Newmar is still around they stop making 5th wheels in 2010 they say it was because that they could not keep up with all the other towable out there I think it was because it just had to many tires hahahaha

Hmmmm, duallies on the 5er. Never thought of that. Maybe 8 Marathons would hold up better....nah, just replacing the 6 on the truck last year had me reaching for the Xanax.

It was a Newmar and he stated that he replaced the tires because of age and the long trip he was making. Better safe then sorry I guess. He did say it weighed 20K. Sorry I didn't get pics. I was in aahhh at the dually's, as I had never seen it before.

Newmar is still in business as stated. They have, however, discontinued some of their models, like the Mountain Air and a few others. They were sure top of the line models.

The tandem duals are normally Dexter axles rated at 10,000 lbs. with full floating axles and bearings plus 3 to 3.5 inch wide brake shoes. The tandem dual axle system is far superior to two 7000 lb. axles as they are built similar to the big rig trailers that accomplish millions of miles with little maint. Initial cost is high but well worth the long term investment when the new 5th wheels tend to get heavier and larger. I guess it all comes down to the fact that "we get what we pay for". LOL
