MorRyde IS 7K or 8K
I'm getting IS and DISC brakes in December and trying to decide 7K or 8K. Gary Wheeler suggested staying with 7K since my current axles are 7K. Other MorRyde folks say even If I get 8K it will not change my RV Specs since the frame is spec'ed for 16K (14K in back).
They also say that if I get 8K IS, the springs in the IS will be set for the weight of my trailer.
So other than the 8K hardware being beefier, why go with it?

Because it’s beefier. Full and long timers tend to be heavy. Having that beefier hardware was key to me despite the fact that the official weight specs don’t increase. The roads I traveled over the past year have been brutal and had I not gotten IS I would have installed higher capacity springs and steel enhancements to my frame along with 8k axles. It was an easier decision for me to just go with the IS. The OEM structural components appear to just meet the calculated loads IMHO.

I suspect that he is telling you that because your trailer will ride smoother with a suspension matched to the weight of the trailer. As an example, I bet you like the ride of your pickup much more when you have a couple of thousand pounds in the bed versus an empty bed. It's like the three bears story, there's too little, too much, and just right. With as many of these that MorRyde has done, I bet they know what they are talking about.

This was my thought until they said that they choose the spring rubber based on the actually weight of the trailer not just going with 8K. Sounds like it would be an 8K IS with a 7K spring. The steel parts would be beefier, but the ride would be a 7K ride. It sort of makes sense, but I'm a BSEE and not a BSME. My one mechanical class was on beams an not suspensions.

I have heard the the 8K MOrryde adds roughly 880 lbs to the trailer weight. If the trailer is GVWR of ~16500 give or take or whatever then in theory the CCC will be reduced accordingly. I know the suspension add is unsprung weight but the scales don't care whether it is sprung or unsprung since they record the entire weight upon them. Engineers among us please weigh in (no pun intended).

Well the last time I had the rig weighted the Trailer GVW was 15,275 with a max of 16,000. Pin weight was 3,325 or 22% of total. My TV GVW is 12,375 out of 14,000 and my TV GCW is 24,325 out of 27,000. MorRyde told me this morning that the total increase in weight would be 400-500 lbs.
So 8K IS and Disc brakes it is.

Think about the weight that you apply to the ground from your body just standing there. Now if you jump off a concrete block and land without bending your knees, the weight hitting the ground is not your actual weight, but something more due to the drop and speed of drop. Added safety margin due to 8k is just improved framing to resist stress and damage to rig. And since it is independant, that rough road or dreaded pothole affects just that one wheel and is not transferred across an axle to the other wheel and their is no connection on the same side to transfer shock and stress to the wheel on the same side. I have never felt the 8k to be harsher than the crap that came off the rig. Enjoy the I.S. and disk brakes.

I'll be at MORryde getting the IS and Disc Brake conversion next week. I like the idea of using 8k hardware with 7k rubber... I like the heavier construction of the 8k hardware but don't want the suspension to become harsh for no reason. I want it to absorb shock/motion as much as possible (without bottoming out). Installing an IS that has motion absorbing components that are designed and rated for a rig that's much heavier (than what it's designed for) would be a misapplication of the system. btw.... I'm a BSME...

We are heavier and needed the 8k. That does not mean that what ours needs are work for everyone.

Had ours put on before the rally. Went with the 8k and timken bearings.
Based on the Montana sticker we are on the line for 8k figure bigger is better.
Brian said if the ride was rough it could be changed. So far everything is great.

We were borderline also and went with the 8K last year. Had the 7K on our old rig. Plenty of lrough roads in the last year and haven't found any diffrence on stuff inside with the heavier springs. Even left a pair of glasses on the shelf below the TV when we moved from Elkhart Campground to the fairgrounds in Goshen over all those tracks and they were still on the shelf when we got there.

MORryde originally weighed the unit before starting, but the last I knew their scales were broken and they weren't repairing them.
If you have a recent weight slip showing your Monty's axle weight, I'd go with the 8K, but lighter Shear Springs based on your actual weight.

We have a smaller Montana and went with the 8k. We boondock in a lot of rough places. We did tear a spring and MorRyde was great at getting us in and fixed under warranty.

My 8k ride doesn't seem to be harsh based on what we see inside on arriving at rv parks or what I sense during the tow. Of course we fulltime and couldn't possibly be at the high end of gross or even over, at least that is what I find out in frequent dreams.
