F450 with 6.4L
Looking for opinions - currently pulling a 3400RL with a F250 7.3L and some mods. Pulls great but obviously overloaded.
Looking for a used truck - found a F450 w/ 6.4L Lariat pickup and 51,000 miles.
What are the opinions on the 6.4L PS and how many problems have you had?

We have over 96K miles on our 2008 F-350 6.4L nearly all of them towing our two Montana's not a single drive train problem. We follow Ford maint program and drive 62/65.

6.4L Question
Richfaa - do you still have your DPF intact?

Not trying to discourage you, but the 6.4L was the first generation of Ford's DPF system. I found it significantly affected towing if a Regen occurred going up a mountain, which I do fairly often. It rarely seemed to do a "passive" Regen and consequently it would invoke an "Active" one. This consisted of adding fuel to both exhaust pipes (which come together into one) which affects fuel mileage and limiting boost to 20 whatevers during the cycle and that affected power going up a hill. The result was about a 1-2 MPG decrease compared to the 6.0L or 6.7L. The newer (2011 and up) 6.7L have a much improved DPF technology where "Passive" is the normal Regen when towing.
If you can swing it, try for a 6.7L if you can. The 6.4L is reliable just less fuel/power efficient. Of course if you are unconcerned about legality, you can do a DPF Delete and avoid the issue.

Everything is OEM nothing removed, nothing added.I will get maybe 3 regenerations in our 1200 mile trip to florida. I can see the Pre Turbo temps increase during the regen .A regen will last perhaps 15/ 20 mins during that time the MPG will drop by 1 1/1/2 MPG.
I think later years get better all around MPG.My response was we have not had a single drive train issue in 96K miles on the 2008 6.4L.

My 6.4 never goes into Regen. The DPF has been laying in my tractor shed for 9 years along with the rest of the pollution controls. It has a Spartan tuner on it with the 210 HP tune loaded. It’s never been in the shop. The 6.4 is a much better truck tuned then stock, if you get the right tuner.
