On the ones I have installed prior,I did NOT have to find a solid location to mount it too. You will be fine just installing it at the bottom corner of door and matching hook location on the exterior wall.

Our door with friction hinge works great. Had to adjust the striker plate but that was all...and keep the door lubed.

Our friction hinge works well after 1 year - it takes about 30 knots of wind to move the door.
