Montana Suspension Photos Good & Bad

Well here are two photos of the suspension hanger.

The first hanger seems to be OK. Note the head of the lower bolt and the hanger material visible below the head. None of the walking beam casting is exposed.

Now the next hanger. Notice below the head of the bolt you can see the casting of the walking beam exposed. The hole in this hanger is oval, but the head of the bolt hides the damage.

Hope this helps those of you checking out the suspension.

Gruffy, great pics and explanation, Defiantly something for everyone to keep an eye on. I think i can use this along with the same method of checking big truck spring pins and bushings (if room allows) by using a Large screwdriver or prybar placed in correct position while prying between the spring and bolt to check for play.
Thanks!

Thanks a bunch Gruffy. Since i got a lot of miles on mine I will be checkinging mine real close. I guess Dexter has a kit of some kind with zerk fittings and I will be looking into it soon.

It is great to know about these problems before taking a long trip. But it is sad Keystone doesn't provide rust proofing of critical componets. So I will rust proof them myself.

Is it the shackle wearing or the equalizer(walking beam)? I would guess the weaker link to be the shackle.

John

On Edit: After viewing Your other post I see that the shackle was the problem. Was there any wear on the equalizer? Grease would only really make a difference to the bushing and bolt, the shackles would probably be unaffected.

In a properly designed and installed spring assembly there will be no wear on the shackles. The bolt should be on the shackles so that it doesn't turn in them. All the turning should be between the bolt and the spring eye.
