Interesting. Our government is getting billions of $ for the leases the oil companies have to pay, for drilling rights. Then taxes the oil/gas when it comes out of the ground. State & local governments enjoy the high fuel prices, as they get more sales tax. Oh well, we have to have roads paid for. Good to see fuel prices coming down. The news said, US fuel sales are off 5.6% so far this year.

Guess posting that sticker helps keep the store owner out of the line-of-fire for the angry consumer.

The taxes in Canada is about 45% and the beauty of it is the afer all the taxes are added to the prices the FEDS charge GST on the other taxes.

The "store income," can be as high as 4% (4 cents on the dollar) They are counting on customers running into the store and buying something else. Although there is a small profit in fuel, it's hundreds of thousands of dollars at some stations, which adds up to a nice profit. That profit however, has to purchase the next delivery of fuel. So I'm told.

The 9% Distribution and Retail would normally be expected to cover the 'next' load of fuel, however, with the rapid increases that we were experiencing, the stores were having to go into that 1% to cover the increase that wasn't projected. That said, sales taxes are not used to cover road repairs (for the most part). It is the fuel taxes that are added to the gallons sold -- many states -- Kansas included -- are now hurting because the number of gallons sold is decreasing, hence the taxes received for road building, repair and maintenance are decreasing. Kansas recently formed a committee at the state level to look into our next 10 year road plan -- and they were told to consider no new fuel taxes in their deliberations. So, they are now talking about usage 'taxes'; everything from actual mileage driven to be paid annually to increases in your annual vehicle registration to possibly turning more of the states highways over to 'turnpike authorities' and charging to drive on them. These are all just thoughts at this point but other states are also doing the same as we move away from so much fuel usage to other (hybrid) sources of power. Oh well, dang soapbox just jumped under my feet again, I'll get off this dang thing. You all have a great time out there - be safe.
