Cleaning Molding

Help!!!!!!!!! What do some of you use to clean the white molding and caulking on the edge of the molding? Dirt lays on the top edge of the molding along the side of the unit.

Be careful with that Awesome. It is a strong Caustic! Watch your eyes. Do a test spot on where you spray it to see what it does to it especially the metal trim below the fiberglass or gel-coat sides. It won't hurt the gel-coat but it seems to bleach out the white metal. It looks good if you cover it evenly otherwise it will streak the metal finish.

Not sure what type of molding you have. I know the newer units are different from ours. On ours, I can remove the molding by undoing the screws at each end of each strip. I then roll them up and soak them overnight in a pail of fairly strong bleach solution, about a 1/2 cup to a gallon. This seems to clean away all the embedded mold and provides a degree of resistance to future mold. If yours are the newer kind, I'm not sure how easily they can be removed, and they don't look flexible enough to roll up into a pail. Maybe a bleach pen might work, or a Magic Eraser.

I've cleaned ours with lacquer thinner on a rag. You can remove the moulding like OntMont says and pull the moulding through a rag that has lacquer thinner on it and the moulding will whiten. Or you can be very careful and wipe the moulding while it is installed, being careful to ensure that the rag is only damp and not soaked with thinner so that the thinner would run. Be careful though that you don't breathe the fumes.

We had all that moldy molding from camping in Florida and Pennsylvania. It took one season in Arizona and the molding looked nice and clean again. The dry climate took care of the problem.

I seem to remember someone in the past recommending Mr.Clean Magic Eraser as well. Haven't used it myself, but I figured since my memory is actually functional tonight that I would pass it on.

Hey Ray-- how you doin'? I just read an article in the newspaper today about using epsom salts and liquid dish detergent on grout so if it warms up a little here in Omaha, I'm going to try that on mine but I'll be careful not to get it on the body itself. I may just take part of the molding out before trying it. I'll let you know how things turn out!
