AARP Medical Plans

Has anyone had a AARP medical insurance plan, suchas, Meical Advantage? If so, have you been pleased or displeased? We are looking for a good supplemental plan until we are eligible for Medicare. Thanks.

When I checked into AARP supplements, I found that they were overpriced. Decided not to get anything. Since I'm retired Air Force, I purchased a supplement from Hartford for $65/month for my wife until she turned 65. Then she went on Medicare and Tricare became her secondary.

Price tells you nearly nothing about medical insurance. As a former agent, I can tell you with confidence, that medical insurance policies are difficult to compare because the details of coverage are convoluted. In my opinion, one needs to buy the coverage that you can afford or tolerate. I said coverage - not premium.

If I were not on Medicare, I would strongly consider a high deductible catastrophe type policy. It would be something like a $1500 to $2000 annual deductible with a million dollar lifetime limit. It is not the first $1500 or $2000 that will destroy you financially. It is the $200,000 - $500,000 incident that will take you down. If you are paying $800 - $900 a year for a lower deductible, that is high priced insurance.

Just remember, regardless of what your agent says, the terms of the policy determine your coverage. Be sure to carefully read the exclusions. What the right-hand giveth the left-hand taketh away.

It also depends on what state you are from. Medicare part B and medigap coverage changes with each state. We received a rude shock when we moved to Texas and our premiums went up. It is called a budget adjustment.

Myrna, We just moved to Belton, Tx. a year ago and finding out about adjustments. We had a $500K houe in Hawaii and paid $1200 a year on property taxes, have a $300K condo on Lake Belton and pay $8000 on property taxes. We have riends in Bastrop, the Becks, Jackie an Merle. Don't know if you know them, Jacie is dept manager in Lawn and Garden at WALMART and Merle works for LCRA. We campout with them in Fredericksburg when we are in Texas.
Haven't decided what we want to do on suppplemental insurance, fortunately I am retired military, which sure helps.

We are so fortunate to be retired Federal Government..Our Health insurance premium is the same no matter where we are. My Medicare is primary and the Fed Health is secondary.. I do get a small SS check ..very small due to "WEP"..(don't get me started) I pay SS, Earned the benefit but can't collect all of it,,because i was federal Employee// however what I am allowed to collect is enough to pay for the Medicare premium... What Medicare does not pay the Fed health picks up. Helen.. being a Youngun is not a medicare person but the Fed plan BC/ BS a very good plan and thus far have paid well execpt for the co pays.. so far we are good...

Bob: Sorry don't know the Becks. We are here in Bastrop for about 4 months each winter (2 so far) so haven't met very many of the locals. They probably aren't members of the Sr. Center, but I do frequent WalMart, so will keep an eye out for Jackie.

Medical insurance is a big problem for us. We're a few years away from retirement but when my wife retires we'll both lose insurance. She'll be on Medicare but I'm a few years younger so I'll have to find an affordable plan. My agent told me although it will be expensive, the cost won't be the main problem. The biggest problem is that they will likely exclude just about everything related to any pre-existing conditions. That will leave us paying most of the cost out of pocket anyway.

Pays for her Curves
Will pay for a Gold's Gym membership for me. We live outside any area they would site a Gym
Fees:
$50 Emergency Room
$100 Ambulance
$10 Office visit
$30 to see Specilist
$512 for 10 day Hosp stay and NO CHARGE for any further lenght of stay for that incident.
$9.00 MONTH PREMIUM

We have Mutual of Omaha and has worked well for us. We pay $101.43 each. No co payment, no deductable. Can go to any doctor.
We have Advantra for perscriptions and pay $19.83 month each. Pays very well.
We get them filled at Walgreens and get a 3 month supply. Mine cost about $25 dollars for all 6 prescriptions.

We have the AARP Medicare supplement that costs us $130.50 a month for the 2 of us and we have never had a problem with anything. It is by United Healthcare and you can go to any doctor, specialist, or hospital without prior approval. We have been very pleased with it.

My Dad had AARP and was concerned that the price kept getting higher. Too make a long story he now gets his supplemental insurance from Freedom Blue. It is part of Blue Cross. The way it works his Medicare payment plus his supplemental insurance payment go to Blue Cross. He save $100 a month. I'm quoting prices from memory but I belive they are close. It would be worth contacting them for a quote.
PS His coverage was much better.

Without getting into a galling discussion about AARP's political agenda. We use them and as far as the coverage and service, we have nothing negative to say about them. I was hospitalized with the heart issue. Dianna visited the ER with a broken foot and later had major abdominal surgery. All this since returning to the States on March 1. We have yet to pay a dollar except for medications. Those came at a reduced rate under the Part D coverage, also with AARP as provider.

As an insurer, not a problem. As apolitical lobby, gag.

Stiles--must agree with your last sentence! Bill's mother had AARP insurance which covered her final illness--nearly four months in intensive care. The bottom line was an incredible (we still can't believe the amount!) $999,000+ and AARP covered every penny. The entire family will be forever grateful that she made the choice to use them.

I cannot in good conscience give AARP money to further their political agenda even if it means I cannot get their medical insurance. There are other options.

Ditto.

They'll not get a cent from me.

Ditto what toolmanroy and Cat320 said. After asking them three times I finally got them to take my name out of their data base. I happily don't get any of their ads now.

I thought I might be coming on a little too strong, so thanks for the heads up.

We have had our problems trying to get private insurance until Medicare, but AARP was not even a consideration.
