GM truck neutral start backup switch.

It seems that this switch is prone to frequent failure. My symptoms were a flaky transmission indicator on the dash and door locks that would not unlock when the transmission was put in park.

I got an estimate from the local GM dealer to replace this switch and they wanted over $600 bucks.

I am pasting a link concerning this switch http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=338137 here so you can better understand what it is and how to replace it.

I ordered a switch from my local Allison distributor for $80 (same switch & P/N) and will replace it myself. If you are not mechanically inclined, I am sure an independent shop can replace it in less than one hour.

BTW, GM charges $232 (list) for the same switch.

Don't know what year model you have, but one thing about this switch. It is covered under the Federal Emissions part of your warranty. IIRC, 5 years or 80,000 miles. Look in the owner's manual. I had mine replaced on the 04 GMC, and they wanted me to pay. I showed the service writer the listing in the manual, and GM paid.

I am the lead mechanic for a fleet of 68 school buses all with allison trans and we only have changed two neutral switches over the last five years.

IIRC, the early year models (02,03)were the ones that were really problematic. Seems it had to do with the switch getting either water or oil contamination from a bad seal. Though mine was changed, I do not think it was bad. The mechanic merely misdiagnosed the problem. Ended up being in the ignition switch.

I have a 2007 Chevy 3500 and had the "stop lamp switch (intermittent)

relaced at 12,633 miles and it was under warranty. Truck would not

start in park, had to put it in neutral to start it and then into drive.

Your replies are interesting. I posted about the problem because of the wierd symtoms I had so anyone else with the same symptoms would not be in the dark as what the problem is.

This is strange! If you notice, symptom is spelled incorrectly. I wanted to edit it but the text of the original message is correct. The preview and the posting is not. Here I thought there was a lot of misspelling in the posts on the forum. Hmmmm!

I was getting the "range shift inhibited" message on the DIC. No tranny engagement at times. If I kept shifting, I could finally get it to shift. After the mechanic changed the switch, he confided in me he had never worked on an Alli before. I cut a quick path to another dealer!
