Super Glide Hitch Concern

Hi,

Went out today and hooked up the trailer for a weekend outing. I have a pull rite hitch and everything latched as usual. Retracted the landing gear and started to do my final check. I lifted the handle and to my dismay, it unlatched with weight in the hitch. It has never done this before. I lowered the gear and tried again. Put a little forward pressure on and the locking lever stayed latched. Put in reverse and too pressure off, it would have unhooked... I called rv dealer and they were unsure why it would do that. In visibly checking, it is closed and locked. I put a lock in the slot and the latch wont lift and release now by accident.

Anyone had this problem, or is it normal for this hitch? All parts look good and it is lubed with the spray on graphite spray.

Thanks for your replies in advance

Steve

I have a Super Glide also. I just went back to the manual and according to what it states there if you pull the handle straight back when the jaws are closed nothing should happen. When you lift and pull that is how the jaws release to drop the trailer. You have me confused now. This is one of our safety checks after hooking up each and every time. For example when you put a lock on this hitch it prevents the handle from being lifted so that neither you or anyone else can releasing the trailer. How have you released the trailer in the past?

Maybe some one else with the Super Glid can jump in for assistance.

Steve, I've never pulled that handle when I didn't intend to unhitch so can't answer that question. But I also put a padlock through that opening so the handle cannot be pulled out, either inadvertently or intentionally by someone thinking it would be a cute prank while we're parked and in Walmart.

To help view the jaws in the closed position i did this. Make sure jaws are completely closed and then put some paint about 1" long on the jaws. then before your pull test you can view from behind the hitch to see if jaws went all the way closed. It helps

I have had my SuperGlide since 2003. Never owned any other type 5er hitch.
If you properly backed into the pin and activated the jaw closing mechanism the handle should slip into place. Pull forward just a tad and you are ready to go and the handle should not be able to be pulled. Once the hitch is closed and forward pressure is applied it should not open no matter how hard you pull the handle.
Now if you just back in and do not add that tad of forward pressure the handle could possibly be able to be pulled out.
Back into the hitch, relieving the forward pressure, and you should be able to pull the handle to open the jaw.
Other than relieving that forward pressure and pulling the handle there is no way that the trailer should come off.

If you are still having problems contact Linda Groning at PullRite, phone # 800 443 2307. Linda is the Senior Customer Service Specialist and she really does know her SuperGlides.
