black tank

well this summer our black tank leaked. today I removed the tank and found part of the lid / top came apart. There is a 12' section were the welded seam came apart and about 10" were the weld held and the split paralleled the weld. I was always under the impression an ABS weld should never come apart. is this true? Another thing, the tank wash / flush is a joke. I hooked it up and watched it, what a joke it does nothing. Any aftermarket flushes any good?

We flush the old fashioned way, a hose thru the toilet.

Hi

The Tornado flush system has received good reviews.

Ditto Jimmy, we have used the black tank flush system on all three rigs and never had a problem whatsoever. I do use a five minute fill, then flush to add some force to the flush water. Bingo

Our flush system works I guess because it adds water to the tank, but since I have never actually been able to have the tank out and hooked up to watch it, I don't know how well it works.

I am curious since you have actually seen it working, exactly how does it work? Are there multiple spray nozzles? Locations? ???

Sorry to burst bubbles here, but, until you get to see what it is and how it works you can only assume it works good. Sorry. Its a little dome shaped plastic with maybe 10 holes on it and the holes are rather small. I can't believe this setup does much of anything in the way of cleaning the tank. I got to watch how it worked and I'm not impressed will be looking for something different or make something myself. For those who think it works fine , don't be fooled.

I guess I dont see the issue here.
It adds water to the tank so you can flush out the debris which is all I expect it to do.

I don't know what it does inside the tank. But I do know that running the black tank flush after draining the tank does flush out quite a bit of additional solid material. I run the flush for 1-2 minutes, drain, flush 1-2 minutes, drain, repeat until water is near clear. First time out comes a lot of dark water and solid material. Each subsequent drain becomes less so.

We are not sure that anything completely cleans out the tank. We drain the Black tank down, then turn on the flush until it runs clean. We leave the flush running as we then drain both gray tanks. When all appear to be drained we shut off the flush until all is drained, then close all of the valves. The pipe is clean and nothing is dripping. When we hook up at the next campground there is always a little residue that greets us. I guess we have to be satisfied with getting most of the stuff drained.

I had one on our SOB that had 8" of surgical tubing and it whipped around and cleaned the whole tank.

Having had a tank seam issue on my galley grey tank...I don't believe that the top is joined chemically to the bottom part of the tank. I DO know that the ABS repair job I did should be better...as it is a chemical bonding. Thank you Ozz. I did chemically bond the whole of the top seam instead of just doing the area of separation. Why face another leak and have to drop a second time... John

We have a 2014 Big Sky and have had problems emptying the black tank we flush it as many as 6 times and it seem to be clear, then when we get to our next campsite and take off the sewer cap a little black water comes out. Anybody have this problem????? We are taking to the dealer next month hoping they can fix it since it is still under warranty....

We did the ABS tank repair too, thanks to OZZ also. Worked fine.

Temecula, seems lots of us have the seepage from one of the tanks. Lots of us have installed a gate valve on the dump pipe.

http://www.amazon.com/Valterra-T58-T...=rv+gate+valve

This stops the surprise when you remove the cap.

Understand that residual water in the lines, between the valves and the outlet is not uncommon. Even listing heavily to port when dumping seems to leave water in the lines. Do you dump the galley and showers tanks after the black tank? If you do, then the residual water in the lines should be grey not black. If it is black you could have a problem with the black valve not shutting completely.

In any event, to avoid the surprise waiting when you open the outlet, use an add-on gate valve.

Available at Camping World and other (cheaper) locations.

always had the problem from time to time of slight leakage of black water when I got to the next campground and it was ALWAYS caused by tissue getting stuck in the valve when dumping at the last campsite and then it will not close all the way so every so often I had to take apart the valve and remove the tissue from the knife valve and good to go after that ,now on my new Montana I make sure the water runs nice and clear when dumping and flushing before I close it and not had a problem since

Kevin, maybe the backflow valve is screwed up and not letting enough water through for the sprayer to be effective. Bad valves are a common problem, and I'm thinking of replacing mine with a piece of pipe and using an external backflow preventer.
