Is this true?

Looking for experienced reflection in regards to when to change tires. I have had a 5th wheel for close to 20 years. I upgraded to GY 614 tires several years ago and have routinely tried to change them out about 5 year intervals.

Today I asked a tech at the Rv repair shop I use what they suggest to be an appropriate time to replace them. I received a very loud "2 1/2 years" and no longer if you want to feel safe.

We are planning on taking our 2013 Montana 3100 rl to the Kentucky derby from California in April. I have never tried the Sailun tires, but it seems everyone is raving about them and the relatively low price.

My tires look great but it is the unknown that concerns me. Would hate a blowout in the middle of nowhere.

Goodyear says 5 years. Now let’s think about this a tech says 2 1/2 and the manufacturer says 5 years now I don’t know who to believe.

I believe the tech was talking about risks. Just wondering how many people have experienced blowouts with GY in less than 5 years. I have not, but Sailuns seem cheap enough to insure saftey as I approach 5 years

Tires are inexpensive insurance, I try to replace at 3-4 years regardless of mileage.

My GY G114 went 4 1/2 years before a Blow out. Sailuns went 4 years before a Blow out. In both cases there was no road junk, temps and pressures were normal, speed was 65, they just exploded, no known reason. And these are the 17.5 H rated tires.

5 Years unless unusual wear or you're dragging that rig 50K miles. You're being scammed....

I believe the Goodyear, much valued, replacement warranty for a G614 tire is 4 years. That tells me all I need to know.

3 Years for us!

After towing since 2006--my tire schedule is 3 years between replacement. Works great for us. Also buy GOOD tires!

My 3075RL was lighter than most and I could run Michelin XPS Ribs. Michelin said inspect yearly at 5 years and replace at 10 years. I replaced at 9 years and about 20,000 miles still looking nearly new. Never even a low tire. And that was routinely running in 100+ temps at 70 mph for long stretches at a time.

I would believe the manufacturer before a tech wanting to sell new tires.

I didn’t get anywhere close to 4 years out of them. In my case the warranty wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

I run Five years... Some say 3, 2, 1... I have not had a flat or blow out in over 45 years of RVing..

It depends on the tire, how its cared for, covered when not towing to prevent UV damage, and towing speeds..

I tow at 62 mph... I also do not tow when the outside temp is over 95 degrees...

My last set saw 6 years of use.. They looked almost as new as the day they were installed.

Currently run Sailuns... I would not pay the ridiculous price for a GY G614.. I prefer Hercules and Sailuns...

Still rolling on my set of sailuns dated 52 week of 2016, that were installed in May of 2017. 90% of the time it sits in my totally enclosed pole barn with the tires off the ground. It sees no rain snow or sun.

My Saluins reached the 5 yr mark this past August. Most all our trips don't amount to more than 3500 miles per year. The unit is under cover and wheels covered. Because of the 5 yrs as of this last August I'm going to replace them. They have no more than 15000miles. Going to go with Les Scwab Towstar ST235/80R-16/12.

I lost (I thought) my paper work on when I bought my Michelin tires. I usually replace around 5 years but had them on for 5 yr and 6 months. They looked very newish. Had 2 blow out last summer. I was driving around 65 both times. Temps were probably 85 for first one and 95-100 for the 2nd one. Little did I know they were 1 year and 4 months old when i installed them! ULP. $9600 later, I was back ready to go next year. I only paid $500 deductible and State Farm picked up the rest, so that was good.

An aside here - I had already lost 30 days after 10 days on the road to start the summer to had the engine eventually replaced!!! Then another 4 days to replace the fan assembly near Bozman, Mt. So wife was ready to hang up the traveling shoes for good. The next day after arriving home, she saw a rainbow over the rig sitting on the street and took it as a sign!! So we are both ready for this summer!

Goodyear is my tire.
5 years is standard unless wear indicates otherwise.
Never had a blowout or trip impact issue and always change at about 5 years unless wear/mileage mandates sooner.
I do log many road miles..not a weekender rig..
On my third set now with no regrets..

Tires

I learned to look at the date of manufacture. If older than five years from that date they should be replaced.
When buying them, if they are a year or more old, I refuse them, because then they have less than 4 safe years service available.
Trailer tires rarely look worn out, but the rubber deteriorates from the time of manufacture. They rot from the inside.
I got this info from a tire review site about 7 or 8 years ago. It's the same for truck and car tires.

Maybe 2 1/2 is if your trailer sits on them for months at a time, outside in the sun. Mine are at 3 years and I'm contemplating putting new ones on, even though we tow our rig once a month. Changing tires is not fun and worse is if your tire grenades and destroys the side of your trailer.........had that happen about 15 years ago on a Thor Jazz 5th wheel.

We have put about 40000 miles on our 2020 monty.OEM tires were Sailuns. Wear is pretty even with 1/4" of tread left. Tire manufacture date was 3419 so they are pushing on 5 years but we will swap out before departing our current site in March. Will replace with new Sailuns. Great tire so far.

I change my tires five years from the date listed on the tire regardless of tread wear! This is based on years of experience of living in a trucking family; and one blow-out due to tires that aged out. It cost $$$ to repair the RV from the debris from the blowout.
